I don't get why a lot of sites still don't have proper mobile websites. Why have one if it's not going to show you the actual article and just dump you on a generic redirect page.

Eh, not to downplay the horribleness of prison, but women's prisons really are a far cry from men's. Unless you get raped by the guards, of course.

People are always coming to me. "Michael, I have a secret. Your the only one I trust." No thanks, because keeping a secret can only lead to trouble. Like I was watching Cinemax last weekend. This movie, Portrait of a... Prostitute something. Secrets of a Call... More Secrets of a Call Girl. And the lead character, Sheila, is framed for murder. She goes on the run and winds up working at a bordello in Malibu. I don't, I don't want to live like that. I like it here. I don't want to be Sheila, I like being Michael Scott.

Ugh. I have an addicted niece who spent some time in jail in CA (primarily for being an asshole in public and failure to appear). I naively thought she might be allowed to attend NA or AA classes. Nope. They kept her doped up on so much Thorazine the entire time she was locked up that she was a zombie, and had a seizure when she was released and cold-turkeyed off it.
She's a worse addict now.
Not a cool story.

Waaayy back when HBO was a cool channel. OZ was a show set in a max security prison, kinda like Days of our lives with shanks and cell rape instead of wine and afternoon sex.

Most maximum security prisons are built so that the guards can see every cell and open area from a command post. The prison in OZ was just the opposite. The guards could not see anything and there were more blind spots than Tokyo during rush hour. Lots of places for misdeeds to be committed.

US prisons suck mightily at reforming. Many other prison systems do better. Norway has a maximum sentence of 21 years and a fraction of the recidivism rate.
Still, there's a lot of variance between prisons - some states are better than others. It's my understanding that Texas prisons are suprisingly progressive, assuming you're not on death row. Mississippi is near the bottom of the list.
Consider that mom is apparently in a very bad way, were prison might actually be the safest spot for her at the moment.

Okay, so it was a badly built & managed max security prison. We don't have any of those here in the states, do we? *chirp*
That's not to say that OZ didn't depict about 10 years of incidents for 10k prisoners in 1 season with half a dozen actors playing prisoners.

It might also be that prison is actually really boring. The more violent the offender, the more segregated they are from the population. Of course, like everywhere, if you go looking for trouble you're sure to find it...
That doesn't make good TV or Fark cliche though, where there's a horny bubba around every corner!

A friend did a couple years starting in 2004 for selling reefer. Their are four primary security levels for prisons in Ohio these days, plus a few others for special cases (sex offenders start their bids in different prisons, and there is a supermax in Youngstown for special cases among others).
You start your time in a closed/high level security prison (the name escapes me at the moment) before they pick your home camp and send you on your way. Every nook and cranny is covered by at least one camara, and there are always at least a team of CO's on hand for every undertaking. One would have to go out of their way to find a place thats unmonitored. From the perspective of a medium build nerdy-looking white guy, prison is really boring. Working out, watching TV, reading and eating are your main passtimes. The OZ-styled prisons are closer to Old Mansfield which people called "The Castle" - now mothballed except during Halloween to give haunted house tours.
One thing that comes to light really quickly is the sheer quantity of non-rape sex that goes on in there. A large portion of the male populace becomes functionally queer when their options slim down. These are men who show a certain lack of self-control on the outside and this behavior carries over in a rather odd way - manifesting itself in a "I'll fark a guy, but I'm not gay!" mentality that could be accurately be described as hypocrisy. Any hole will do, and there are more than enough willing participants to keep everyone happy.
As for AA/NA or any type of college/vocational training, short timers can forget about it. The waiting lists for these programs are exceedingly (2 - 3 years) long, and limited in scope. There is no budget for any type of OJT-style training, and the maximum degree one can attain is an AA.
Something that many may find odd is that, inverse to the average person's assumptions, the most violent offenders are also the quietest. Knowing that you're going to be locked up for a large chunk of your life is good reason to make nice with your neighbors, and it's a very bad idea to cultivate a bad reputation (thief, card cheat, deadbeat) as the close living conditions make retribution easy. Short timers are the loudest, steal the most, and are the most likely to start unnecessary fights. Murderers make (under the circumstances) good cell mates, crack heads do not.
