rynthetyn: I've been to hundreds of NHL games and the only time I've ever seen fights in the stands is when the Flyers come to town.

I've seen plenty of fights, sucker punches and other nasty shiat from fans at lots of sporting events... Not to defend these Flyers fans, but this shiat happens all the time when you get drunk assholes in a group.

A few seasons ago, some Bruins fans put a Habs fan in the hospital after knocking the shiat out of him outside the Garden.

I saw a Chicago fan sucker punch a Bruins fan in Chicago after the Bruins won the game.

I love the rivalry between teams and the shiat talking as much as the next hockey fan, but anyone who gets into brawls and hurts people over a farking hockey game is a moron.

Gotta agree here with GAT here. Based on my experience at various Philly, Eagles, and Flyers games (and compared to SoCal, SF, DC, Boston, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Seattle) there's a groupthink phenomenon in Philly that makes fan violence more commonplace.

Not all football teams find it necessary to have a municipal court judge (new window) on duty during games.

It's the beauty thing about going to see Wild games in St. Paul, you don't get jerk offs like this. Been to a handful of games up there and have never heard of or seen behavior like this - and after the shootout win my Blackhawks had over Minnesota last month, I was expecting something - maybe even a little jawing. Got nothing in return from Wild fans and I was deck out in Hawks stuff. If anything was said it was, "Hey that's a nice Bobby Hull sweater."

I go to AHL games. The crowds are fantastic. It's either kids who love hockey, or absolutely hammered old guys who cheer everything.

I've found the Pens fans to be fine. Only fight I've seen was with drunken Rangers fan at verizon center (maybe two years ago. It was when they retired Dale Hunter's number). A couple of people were being taken out of the arena by the cops, a few of them bleeding from the mouth or nose.

I don't know if it's lying so much as just a case of "Bias Confirmation"... Folks see what they want to see and disregard things that don't fit in with their views. It leads to sweeping generalizations such as, "All (insert team I don't like)'s fans are douche bags". Everyone's guilty of it to one degree or another.

It's much better "these days", I should have qualified my comment. Go back 10 or so years when you could walk up on game day and get 400 level seats. When Pittsburgh was in town you would be up there with tons of their fans, and there were plenty of altercations.

Philly fans beating up fans of opposing teams? It must have been a day that ends in y. Philly fans are the rejected after-birth of major professional sports fans. It's an ingrained attitude built by years of repression and anger that they live in a shiatty town at the end of a river where the rich half of New Jersey dumps their sewage.

I went to a certain bar on Causeway St. to watch a Habs/Bruins game last season, and left the moment the game ended (Bruins won 6 or 7 to zip, there were a bunch of fights...) after my last beer was served in a plastic cup. I asked why, since all my other beers had been served in pint glasses. Bartender told me they don't serve anything in glass after Habs/Bruins games, because it might end up flying around the bar. She also mentioned that the troublemakers were usually Bruins fans.

I said "check please, I'm outta here..."

I had a 10-game plan in the 400s (behind the ever-watchful eyes of Yvon Labre) for a few years back when it was the MCI Center and the Crapitals were turrible, I agree with your assessment. Philly and Pittsburgh were always fun games, and it felt like home during the Rangers games.

Not to justify the philly fans, because they are clearly assholes, but I'm a flyers fan who mainly sees them when they are in my kneck of the woods playing the rangers and devils. I've caught plenty of shiat from rangers and devils fans, and there have been more than a few occasions that would have ended in fights had I not walked away.

My favorite though was a friend who wore a devils jersey to a flyers\rangers game at the garden. He hadn't even made it to his seat before some guy beaned him in the head with a full beer. I think we can all agree, he had it coming.

I've only seen one fight based on the jersey someone was wearing at an avs/wings game during the height of the rivalry. Wings fan got tired of being laughed at and punched a random avs fan walking by. Everyone pulled them apart before it got too serious.

I've seen hawks and sharks fans that needed to get hit in the face for talking smack to dads with kids and otherwise bystanders.

Did see two sharks fans get beat couple of years ago at the train station after a game, but one of them grabbed a girls ass and she sicked her brothers on him. So that would have happened, jersey or not.

I saw a guy wearing an Islanders jersey at a Devs/Rangers game at the garden, and everyone just made fun and laughed at him.

Rangers / Flyers fans have special animosity towards the devils because they're upstarts who've been way more successful over their short tenure than either two "classic" teams. Having said that, the last few times I've been to Pru, I've witnessed some very hooligan behavior on the part of Devs fans. All those kids I used to see at half empty Continental Arena in the 90's grew up to be some cocky bastards. I kind of saw it coming. I guess they're giving back what they got back in the day.

There is no excuse for physical violence to another fan based upon which rich man he / she chooses to further enrich by supporting his sports franchise.

Sully's? That's where I always drink before Bruins' game. Definitely a Homer's bar (can't beat the prices, either).

They only turn away Habs fans, though. I've gotten shiatfaced in there with Toronto, Buffalo and Philly Fans without any major incidents before. Don't think I've ever seen a fight. Seen more than few Bruins' fans get tossed out for being dumbasses, though.

I've been that third-party fan myself, showing up at a Nationals/Brewers game in Cubs garb.

It turned out to be the Corey-Hart-hits-three-home-runs game. By about the 8th, my section had pretty much figured I'd suffered enough.

I've never understood the need of people to wear a jersey to a game that isn't of one of the teams playing. I see it all the time at UAF games, too - Minnesota, North Dakota, and the game is UAF vs. Ferris State. It's dumb. Not as dumb as the guy who wore his Brett Favre Vikings jersey to a hockey game, but it's still up there.

Check it out. It's a little dive bar on Canal St. Amenities are basic, to say the least, but it's a good atmosphere before and after games. They fill up quick though and stop letting folks in.

I used to drink at the Penalty Box years ago, too. More of an old man dive bar now, though. Nice if you just want to have a quiet drink before the game, though.

...and yeah, The Harp sucks.

Got Loge seats for the Bruins/Devils game on Mar 1st from my Art Director for Christmas. I always sit with the poor folks up in the Balcony, so I'm looking forward to seeing how the other half lives. : )

Oh, I love the Balcony... Never had a bad time up there. Even those seats are getting pricey now that they've won the Cup. I remember driving up to Boston on the day of the game and being able to get $30 Balcony seats.

Favorite Balcony moment:

A bunch of drunk assholes were sitting up at the top screaming obscenities at each other... Not the usual stuff, but loudly screaming "Go fark your mother!" and the like over families and kids. Uncalled for shiat.

Anyway, someone complained and this big fat Irish cop comes waddling up the stairs, and just says, "If you jackasses make me come up here again tonight, the whole lot of you are going to be spending the night in a comfy cell courtesy of the Boston PD. Understand, children?" Not a peep out of them for the rest of the game.

As a Rags fan, I really hate Philly. I really do.

But it isn't confined to Philly.

When I was at the Pru to watch the Rangers knock the Devils out of the playoffs in 07, my entire SECTION erupted into a drunken brawl. 60 year old guys, 20 year old women, even a 13 year old kid if I remember right. It spilled out onto the beautiful streaks of Newark (/sarcasm) and people were throwing other people into cars. Most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

Now I live in SC so I don't get to participate in anything but the Rangers' AHL team being awesome at hockey.

It's a lot less ridiculous and a lot more fun.
