As a long time MMA fan and someone that hasn't really watched fake wrestling since the "attitude"/Mankind era could some FWC guy 'splain to me the possible appeal of UFC/WWE crossover from the WWE fan perspective ? Speaking for MMA fans I can say that we never take any of the WWE guys seriously whenever they talk about going legit. Lesnar had his shot and just the act of trying to cut weight to get UNDER 265 lbs almost killed him twice. Bobby Lashly has plateaued as a mid carder guy in a "B" list org. Kurt Angel seems to be just talking about going legit as part of some tired storyline.
They're not fooling anyone. Try as they might to ape certain fo realz submission grappling it looks absolutely cringeworthy to anyone that has seen the real thing. Try entering NAGA or Abu Dabi first if you want to be taken seriously. At least they won't have to worry so much about their poor striking defense.
Sonnen has great trash talk and knows how to hype his own shtick but he'd better get used to the idea of being known as the 2nd best middle weight even AFTER Anderson Silva retires or moves up to light heavy permanently.

Ugh. There's a reason I stopped watching you, pro wrestling: you became too embarrassing.
I love MMA but I hate it when guys like Sonnen treat it like pro wrestling. It's insulting to me that he thinks so little of the average fan that he believes all he has to do is troll to sell tickets. It does irritate me that Dana enables it. This is exactly the kind of stuff that took boxing from being one of the most important, must-see sporting events and turned it into the nonsense it is today.
The reason MMA exploded in popularity is because it's a legitimate sport where the best fighters fight the best fighters. The minute people begin thinking of MMA as sports entertainment, they lose the one advantage they have.

Not a big UFC fan, but all 3 had good credentials in the world of collegiate wrestling before trying (or in Kurts case, thinking) about an MMA career. I'm sure if any of the 3 had started prepping for MMA instead of WWE they would have done fine.
-Kurt is too old and has too many old injuries (both college and WWE)
-Lesnar had a good run, diverticulitis did him in. It was never about cutting weight for him. The fact he never ate his veggies caught up to his body.
-Lashley was quite frankly mediocre at both.

If that were what I was talking about, then you'd be right. The difference is that Ali was legit - he was brash and in your face because that's who he was. Fans, over time, realized that Don King jumping up and down behind two guys shoving each other at the press conference couldn't possibly be real EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Casual MMA fan and fWcer here. I personally don't get the appeal of a crossover either. Sure there are some guys in WWE that have an amateur wrestling background and if they dedicated time to training and getting into shape, could possibly be legitimate (not 'good,' just 'legitimate') MMA guys. People like Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger and Santino Marella (or whatever there real names actually are) would be my guess.
It's just that to my mind, now that UFC is doing huge business and is obviously rather more legitimate than pro wrestling in regards to results, there's no benefit to either organization for crossover. There was when Lesnar went to MMA, as Brock was a huugely marketable name in wrestling circles and was probably more well known than many MMA fighters of the time amongst casual and non fans. So moving from WWE's marketing machine helped bring more eyeballs to UFC. Those eyeballs have stayed and now we get people like the Gracies, Rampage Jackson, Chuck Liddell, Kimbo Slice and Randy Couture (not saying these are active or good fighters, but there ones non-fans likely know) have raised MMA's image in the mainstream consciousness well above that of WWE and the like, plus they don't have the inevitable "it's fake!" backlash that wrestlers do.
I also worry about if Brock does come to the WWE, will it de-legitimize further wrestling as just a retirement home for MMA guys who can't get it done?
I love pro wrestling for it's glorious cartoony stupidity, the whole 'soap opera for men' bit. I like MMA because once in a while, you just want to legitimately see some guys kick some ass. And yeah, Sonnen's never going to be thought of as better than Silva, but that's one hell of a guy to be second to.

While I understand the specific context of "someone beaten into a coma",
shoot-style professional wrestling matches
(which often ended in legitimate submissions, can't speak for worked or legitimate knockouts) and
fixed mixed martial arts matches
are as old as the modern version of the sport. Assuming the two contestants are willing to take some bruises, "real fights" can be staged very, very easily. MMA could just as easily fall back into the same cycle as professional wrestling, where matches are worked, building a group of fans who doubt as to the legitimacy of the sport, and their detractors respond with "WHY DNOT U SAY TOO HIS FACE THAT IT'S FAKE??/?" Lest we forget that pro wrestling was an offshoot of the legitimate grappling contests of the early 20th century.

The dude won the UFC World Heavyweight Championship. If he was a disappointment, then you might as well say the last two-and-a-half years of the UFC Heavyweight Division™ was a gigantic fraud, and that all of us were stupid for paying attention to it, because he participated in the three biggest heavyweight fights in that two-and-a-half-year stretch and the dude who took Lesnar down got dooked on in his title defense. "Lesnar was a disappointment" is apparently the cool and edgy version of "Anderson Silva, the guy who hasn't lost in nearly six years while facing the best competition in his weight class, is overrated."

Sonnen graduated from the WCW Power Plant and was going to be on the WCW roster, only to have that fall through when the promotion folded. I don't know why you guys are surprised. It's an even
more effective
means of selling tickets in mixed martial arts because most pro wrestling fans
know
it's a hype machine. They
know
they're being worked. That's why I laughed my ass off at all the Lesnar haters getting pissed off at his UFC 100 post-fight promo. I.e. "pro wrestler hated by MMA fans for being a pro wrestler get worked by pro wrestling promo after MMA match". Sonnen is in the same boat and he keeps getting people to buy the pay-per-views. If he wasn't cutting ridiculous promos, he'd just be another white dude in MMA with really good wrestling skills, and there's about a billion of those in the American world of MMA right now. Sonnen's wrestling skills may be better than that group, but they aren't good enough to sell as many pay-per-views as "Lance Armstrong did steroids, dumb MMA noobs, lol."

Muhammad Ali was inspired by professional wrestler Gorgeous George.
""A 19-year old Ali met a 46-year old George at a Las Vegas radio station. During George's radio interview, the wrestler's promo caught the attention of the future heavyweight champion. If George lost to Classy Freddie Blassie, George exclaimed, "I'll crawl across the ring and cut my hair off! But that's not gonna happen because I'm the greatest wrestler in the world!" Ali, who later echoed that very promo when taunting opponent Sonny Liston, recalled, "I saw 15,000 people comin' to see this man get beat. And his talking did it. I said, 'This is a gooood idea!'" In the locker room afterward, the seasoned wrestler gave the future legend some invaluable advice: "A lot of people will pay to see someone shut your mouth. So keep on bragging, keep on sassing and always be outrageous."
