Today (tonight, actually) is really the proper day to be giving Christmas gifts anyway. It's Twelfth Night aka Three Kings' Night aka Epiphany Eve aka the Twelfth Day of Christmas (with Christmas Day itself being Day #1).

The giving of Christmas gifts is, according to Christian tradition, supposed to represent the coming of the Magi aka Wise Men and the giving of their three gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the infant Jesus.

Thing is, even according to tradition, the Wise Men didn't come on Christmas Day (it takes time for camels to travel from the Orient, and Matthew was quite clear that the Star of Bethlehem didn't appear until He was actually born). Tradition says twelve days, and the Bible says somewhere before two years (Herod's decree to execute the baby and toddler boys of Bethlehem based on when the Magi told him that the Star first appeared). (Yes, all those Nativity scenes showing the Magi/Wise Men at the Manger are wrong. Matthew was also quite clear that the Holy Family lived in a house in Bethlehem at the time the Wise Men came.)

So, going by tradition, since the gift-giving commemorates the gifts of the Magi, and they traditionally came on the twelfth night and not on Christmas Day, January 5th is actually the day you're supposed to be giving Christmas gifts.

Hey, this way, you can take advantage of the After-Christmas sales! :-)

Tonight at midnight is also when you should turn off your Christmas lights, and tomorrow, on the Day of Epiphany, is when you should take down your tree and other decorations, as that is when the Christmas season is officially over.

Twelfth Night is also the start of the Mardi Gras season, which ends on Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras Krewes all over the place will be partying big tonight or this weekend, having their Twelfth Night Parties.

So how many were free trial downloads and how many were paid? Also how many touchscreen devices were sold as Christmas gifts this year? Seems like A LOT of people were given smartphones/tablets/iPods as gifts and one of the first things they do is download trial versions of stuff (ie. Angry Birds).

Doesn't really seem like that big of a deal considering how many new devices were bought this Christmas. These aren't people that already own touchscreens, these are people who just got one and want to try it out.

Perhaps, but Angry Birds is a great game for smartphones. I keep downloading trials of games all the time, and haven't found a better phone game than AB. Solitaire and Bejeweled are up there, too.

If you have some great phone game alternatives, please share. I'm out of levels on AB, and would love a great new game.

Doodle Jump is a good phone game. Very quick games to fill in time.

Personally, I like Angry Birds Seasons over the original. I've had it since it came out and it's fun to get holiday themes as extra levels.

Well, when I find out someone actively reads/follows Twilight, it lets me know I should avoid them at all costs. That can be seen as a positive. Like a sign warning people about the dangers of going into Chernobyl. Chernobyl is a straight shiathole, but the sign is at least doing some good.

Crush the castle, 1 and two are indeed fine games, but they haven't been updated in years. and after devestating both of them in the course of a day, I found little replay value. At least angry birds keeps feeding new levels every few months.

I'll have to take a look at this radiant you speak of.

As for what is getting a lot of time on my phone?

It's free, but full of Micro transactions to fill out with the extra characters and levels, but I just can't help myself. Pretty much the only game App I've ever paid for.

Whenever I play the angry birds, I put the phone into Airplane mode to kill the Banner ads.

I'm still the only person over the age of 25 who is willing to carry around a dedicated portable gaming device and my phone isn't good enough to play most of the games. Most of mobile games I've seen and played have been through the iPad. Until I'm proven elsewise, it's just more convenient for me to ignore that market entirely. I'm sure there are some decent games, but there's way too much nonsense to filter through.

stewbert: If you have some great phone game alternatives, please share. I'm out of levels on AB, and would love a great new game.

Insomnia gave a 4/5 to Rage HD, and while I can't tell you what the content of the review is since it's behind a paywall, that's usually a sterling endorsement. If the iPhone port of Frozen Synapse ever comes through and it's a good port, I'd recommend that as well.

miscreant: My 4 year old nephew loves the game, so I always make sure to have it on my phone when I go to visit. Maybe it's "bad taste"... who cares, he's 4.

I don't mind if people derive entertainment from simple games. I only mind when they dismiss suggestions, regardless of whether those suggestions are heated or not. I did a complete 180 on Super Meat Boy (originally thought it was average, downgraded it to awful) and Mirror's Edge (originally thought it was awful, then I thought of it as a racing game and my opinion shifted), and in both cases, I was told I was an idiot for embracing my original positions. I agreed and changed my mind. Most people aren't interested in doing that. I fell in love with Descent when I was nine and never once gave a thought to the idea that the control scheme was too complex, so watching adults go with games like Angry Birds and stick with games like Angry Birds is completely foreign to me. The more complex, the better.

Ok, then. My kids all have a DS, but I never enjoyed their games. But, when the train goes through the tunnel, and my Netflix cuts out, I enjoy some Angry Birds. When my wife is watching some shiat on tv, but wants me by her on the couch, I enjoy flinging some birds.

I don't play AB when I have the chance to fire up the xbox.

I sort of agree with you: most games on Android seem to be garbage.

I guess it's not a bad thing as an option of last resort, although I imagine there's alternative options of last resort. I'd be lying if I said that I don't load Brain Age into the Nintendo DS when when I could be playing Henry Hatsworth or Advance Wars. Brain Age fills a niche, even though it's quite deficient at what it's trying to be. That game is what it is, and if somebody has a recommendation for similar superior games, I'd be damn-willing to hear them out. Just seems most people aren't. o.o

stewbert: I sort of agree with you: most games on Android seem to be garbage.

My biggest problem is finding reviews for those games written by people who know anything about the games. Most of them are written for "casual audiences" or written by "casual gamers". Good criticism is very difficult to find. I don't think I've seen anyone publish a decent review of Angry Birds, and I don't say that just because I disagree with most of the positive sentiment handed out to the game. If an article is longer than 500 words, it's not an Angry Birds review.
