The goalkeeper who gave up such a ridiculous goal should have been given his release on the spot. I know the ball was on the other end of the field, but why was he so far off his line and why was he so slow to react? Pathetic effort. If I had given up a goal like that in high school I would have been buried at the end of the bench for the rest of the season so I could wallow in my shame. We practiced that exact situation for hours on end, and you can be sure that none of us ever got used up like that.

No, really. What was that guy thinking? That was probably the most indecisive play from a goalkeeper I've seen in a long time. Catch it on the short hop, play back and punch it over the crossbar, anything is better than getting stuck in no-man's-land and looking like a buffoon. If that's the quality of goalkeeper required by bottom-feeding EPL teams I'm available for the league minimum, and I'd do a better job than that.

Adolf Oliver Nipples: The goalkeeper who gave up such a ridiculous goal should have been given his release on the spot.

I've never seen a ball bounce that far on a soccer field so I'm not going to blame the goalie.

Long hanging kick held up by the wind....
but with lots of topspin...
one bounce and it took off...
it sure didn't follow a pure ballistic rebound trajectory

2012-01-05 03:54:36 AM
Well, that was certainly a thing.

Adolf Oliver Nipples: I know the ball was on the other end of the field, but why was he so far off his line and why was he so slow to react?

It looks like he thought the opposing striker might end up with the pass and he'd need to come out of goal to cut down the angle of attack on the striker.

The bald player coming over and kissing him passionately afterwards validated all my preconceptions about soccer and its players.

Adolf Oliver Nipples: but why was he so far off his line a

He was pretty much exactly where you'd expect him to be. It's not unusual to see goalies come all the way out of the penalty area, and he wasn't even close that. As for the reaction, ball took an odd bounce, goalies miss goals from far closer while on the goal line for the same reason all the time.

FTFY.

wait, something happened in one of these matches?

/curses! I missed it. something prolly wont happen again for 3 years.

The joys of high wind and a firm field, errrr pitch. The keeper thought it would make it to him and he would catch it in the area so he came out to get it only for it to bounce at the arc and the keeper could only stand in awe and shame as it goes in his net...

/it happened to me in club soccer on a turf field
//I hated soccer at that time
///started playing football the next year

Good for Tim Howard, but all credit must go to Everton's newest signing, Agusta Wind.

He realizes it wasn't a result of his skill but of the other keeper's failure? Being a keeper he can probably relate so no point in relishing in a fluke.

He was all class in his after game interview. He felt for the other keeper, stating that this had happened to him once 'a long time ago'. (After the US-England game in the World Cup, Tim apparently spoke to Robert Green and consoled Green about his blunder that allowed the US to score).

Brad Friedel scored for Blackburn, Timmy scores for Everton...

If only American strikers could score with such regularity...

If you have to ask, you have no idea about goalkeeping in general, let alone at a top level like the EPL.

Goaltenders in soccer can be a tight knit group, Howard's reaction was somber because he knew it was just a ball that sailed long, caught a huge gust of wind, and took a ridiculous bounce. The opposing keeper was right where he should have been, coming out to challenge the angle of the Everton striker attempting to win the ball from Howard's kick. Howard wasn't trying to score, he was trying to get the ball up-field to his striker making a run. It was an absolute stroke of luck that could have happened to anyone. Howard reacted how he did because at some point in every goaltender's career an absolute freak break of bad luck has worked against them.

I've played soccer for all of thirteen months, goalie for a whopping six months, and I know you're absolutely wrong.

Nice to see others reinforce that. All in all, a great goalkeeping thread, your post excluded.

That sort of goal, as others have stated, was a complete fluke and a stroke of luck. That said, I don't think I could have reacted as calmly as Howard did. Hell... I flipped out when I got an assist from goal a couple seasons ago... in my lowest-division co-ed league.

A Fark Handle: here's to everton, america's team!

I thought that was Fulham?

One of the cardinal rules for defense is never let the ball bounce on those long kicks up the field. This is an extreme reason why it's a cardinal rule.

Reminds me a bit of Dirk Nowitzki after the Mavericks won the NBA finals last year. You know what he did then? You know what that cocky motherfarker did after his team won the NBA finals? He...

...went back to the locker room. That was pretty much it.
