I was looking for a bar to watch the Bears game in Atlanta.

He said that it's because of men's attitudes in general, even straight men do it. I would say it has more to do with most hetero men having a higher quotient of "not giving a shiat" than most women or gay men.

We don't have a subculture that's designed to prey on our insecurities (see every makeup/fashion commercial or show ever, with regards to women), nor a subculture that cultivates a certain "look" to self-identify yourself within the rest of the population.

It boils down to the same reason goths tend to be pale and have dark hair. Because that's what their subculture expects, and how they get to feel like they belong.


In short, it's not that women PREFER their guys a bit "scruffy", it's that hetero men prefer to be a bit "scruffy" so women can either be choosy and single or not choosy and in a relationship. There's been plenty of periods, historically, where this was vehemently not the case, so it's not anything inherent to the genders, it's entirely cultural.

Which is complete bullshiat. Gay men and women do raise children. And even if they don't female same-sex couples tend to have lower income than average. And while male same-sex couples do tend to have higher income than average but that doesn't mean they aren't supporting their extended family or have other financial obligations. My father and I have four kids to put through college (my nephews - his grandsons) because my idiot brothers can't seem to save a buck.

Because women subconsciously associate scruffy with manly, testosterone, etc, basically better genetically(stronger, virile, etc) for reproducing successfully with. There have been articles posted on Fark about how birthcontrol changes women's taste in men towards more effeminate(read: metrosexual) men because of the alteration in hormones from the medicine(you're not reproducing), and that after the removal of birth control women's desire shifts back the other way. It's biologically influenced, even if the conscious mind can overrule it.
