It's brutal for Americans in their twenties now. Employment is difficult to find and then it's short hours not full time. As an employer, I see incredible levels of depression. The little kids are at risk when the young Moms are not getting the support they require themselves.

It seems we need some sort of WPA again until US unemployment meets some goal. Within the program a key priority should be community nursing, training, child daycare and jobs for young mothers.

Given such a WPA program a clincally depressed young mother, such as this one appears to be, would not be allowed to tough it out for eighteen months on her own. Just my $0.02.

Instead of just creating busy-work out of thing air, how about requiring able bodied males who receive public assistance to contribute back in the form of city beautification, road/utility works or some other function that the city needs? Doesn't have to be chain-gang type stuff but something where the person could at least build a job skill.

Women could staff social service offices, work in public childcare offices or hell, even work on the parks and rec crew if that is what floats their boat.
