so these gop legislatures are all for killing the ruling elite who ignore the plight of the masses?
I am all for this.

/no, I have no idea what is actually in the Magna Carta

Honestly, why would anybody want to call themselves a Republican at all?

I am much more concerned about the marauding half clothed savages. When ever I hear about them I fear for the virtue of my chaste daughter. I am given to understand that the mohawks will abduct her and force her into a marriage with pagan heathen if given the chance.

I'm glad that New Hampshire will finally put an end to this horrible tradition of knighthood scutage.

Ok, I like a good "LOL! REPUBLICAN FAIL!" thread as much as the next guy, but you really need to understand the NH political system. There are 400 State Representatives for a population of 1.3 million people, and they get paid $200 a year.

Really.

There is ALWAYS some good derp to come out of the New Hampshire State Legislature, because it takes NOTHING to become a member of the Government.

I am SERIOUSLY considering making my dad run in 2012. He hates people, taxes, foreigners, the Yankees and those goddamn squirrels that keep chasing the birds away, and disaproves of Tom Brady because he thinks he's too good at things.

He's 70 years old, and he does not know how to work computer.

He would be perfect.

"One of the bill's sponsors admitted that he wasn't terribly familiar with the actual text, and mainly saw the measure as an homage. "

Seriously, we have TIME for homages? What a crock of shiat. Seriously, they want to hold up legislation because it doesn't offer an "homage" to an old document? What it REALLY is is a way for them to(try) and get around that whole silly Constitution thing. man, it's like they let a bunch of 4th graders get elected. Republicans? Barry Goldwater is spinning in his grave so fast that he has traveled back in time, maybe at this point he's gone far enough back to draft a line into the Magna Carta himself: 'Hesover who hath the gall to identify himself as a Republican and use stupid tactics to get around the laws of the United States shall be staked out on yonder anthill and covered with honey for a period of not less than 17 days in July/"

That might do it...

So for $80,000 you have a large portion of the populous who are taking an active roll in their local government? Where the heck does Indiana sign up?!

You should do it. Getting on a city board isn't really that hard either if you case the joint long enough to see which committee is having quorum problems.

New Hampshire, if it weren't for your policies on fireworks and tax free booze, you'd be considered part of Maine as far as I'm concerned.

HellRaisingHoosier: So for $80,000 you have a large portion of the populous who are taking an active roll in their local government? Where the heck does Indiana sign up?!

Yes. New Hampshire has very high voter turnout and a very active government. New Hampshire was the first state to have a female House member. There is a very very large percentage of retired people, young people, and people who have full time real jobs. It is *NOT* a stepping stone for federal power, for the most part, because there is a state rep for every 3000 people. Really.

The ONLY downside to this (and really, it's not so much as a down side as it is hilarious) is stuff like this makes the news and we need to explain to people that no, the guy who said "We should ship the mentally ill to Siberia" does not represent MOST people in the state.

2012-01-04 06:05:09 PM
One of the bill's sponsors admitted that he wasn't terribly familiar with the actual text, and mainly saw the measure as an homage.

This person should be removed from the adult table. Give him some mashed beets and a juice box while he sits at the kiddie table.

Holy f*ck. No wonder these idiots have no idea the damage they cause.

"All members of the general court proposing bills and resolutions addressing individual rights or liberties shall include a direct quote from the Magna Carta which sets forth the article from which the individual right or liberty is derived," is the bill's one sentence.

Isn't this the same republican party that wanted to outlaw allowing courts to reference foreign or sharia laws? Maybe they just forgot that England isn't part of the US. I know geography and history aren't important subjects in their company.

2012-01-04 06:21:24 PM
Remember a year or so ago, when the GOP in various states were busy writing laws about how no laws or court decisions can consider International laws or international court decisions or treaties?

2012-01-04 06:27:54 PM
Will the local systems fall in line?

2012-01-04 06:31:10 PM
"All members of the general court proposing bills and resolutions addressing individual rights or liberties shall include a direct quote from the Popol Vuh, the Mayan creation myth, which sets forth the article from which the individual right or liberty is derived."

Makes just as much sense, and no doubt the bill's authors are just as familiar with that as with the Magna Carta.

JEsus H Christ! This GOP/Libertarian/Freestate Legislature has gone completely off the rails from day one, when they life the ban on weapons inside the Statehouse. Today they fought to lift the ban on guns on campus and in schools.
Yesterday they were saying that the death of a fetus was to be prosecuted as murder of at least manslaughter. They have gone completely insane..LuLz

While I get the thing about the NH government, I would think it would be easier to spot idiots like this in such a small state. You can use them as a substitute for the Welsh they want you to return.

2012-01-04 06:51:11 PM
Well, considering that all laws sponcered by the GOP now are based off the writings of Jesus when he wrote the Constitution, this is rather progressive.

Republicans are basically saying with this legislation (and their canonization of the Constitution) that they are too stupid to engage in self rule, that the brainpower to write rules to govern us has been lost for at least a few hundred years now.

Maybe the Constitution needs to be reaffirmed/rewritten now and again, with the parts that still make sense kept and the parts that no longer make sense thrown out because it is not holy scripture and to treat it as such is harmful to democracy.

Illegal immigration is wrong and problematic.

If we need more immigrants than we have decided to allow then we need to allow more legal immigrants. Tolerating a class of squatters living in a legal grey area (except for their crime, which is not grey at all) is not acceptable. Furthermore the government has a duty to enforce the law. Civil disobedience is for private citizens, not the government.

But you're still a dick.

It's a joke, right? RIGHT?

Idiocracy was a great movie but "idiocracy" does not mean "rule by idiots." It's more like "rule by the unique" (as in idiosyncrasy). What we should be worried about is an embronthsiocracy.

Oops, too late.

Isn't Habeas Corpus laid out in the Magna Carta? Didn't the very same fundamentalist wing of the GOP they represent spearhead the charge to suspend that a few years ago with the PATRIOT act?
