I'm not sure if I should give him kudos for labeling it Sears Tower (its right and proper name), or lambast him for the fact that its officially been Willis Tower since 2009...

FAIL: He forgot to mark all the state borders within Lake Michigan. This could result in another Wisconsin naval incursion into Michigan water. The resulting UP border skirmishes alone could result in the loss of multiple snowmobiles.

There is a yearly cartographer competition? Really? That's nifty.

I've already ordered a copy (flat, so I can get it framed.) Seriously.

That map is art. Nobody puts that kind of work into cartographic rendering these days.

Lachwen: That does look like a lovely map. I'd love to get a good close view of it.

Go to their site and check out the closeups, particularly that of Pennsylvania.

Agreed. As a survivor of two cartography and GIS classes in college (please hold your applause) I can appreciate the time and level of detail that Mr Imus invested in this map. Hats off to you, sir! Congratulations!

Since this thread seems to be populated by geographers and map nuts, can I vent? I farking hate NatGeo's contemporary maps. I hate their fonts, I hate their layouts, I hate their projections, I hate their colors. I know I shouldn't get this worked up about farking maps, but every time I see one I feel like its fingernails on a blackboard.

It wasn't always this way. I loved NatGeo's maps as kid. The last 10-15 years, though... eeeeesh.

"By contrast, David Imus worked alone on his map seven days a week for two full years. Nearly 6,000 hours in total."

Then Malcolm Gladwell still thinks you're a farkstick.

I want to get a Masters in the future, but to be very truthful, the theory of GIS bores the hell out of me. Gimme a GIS, gimme some instructions, and let me see what happens.

That's why you do something with GIS. It looks like mine will be crime data. You can't just do GIS by itself, it doesn't do anything. It's a projection tool.

And no, I'm a UT student.

I'm working on a GIS certificate to go along with my degree, and will likely go on to pursue more GIS courses. I'm looking forward to learning how to bend ArcGIS to my will rather than the other way around.

There's another Farkette whose moniker reveals her to be a map girl, too.
