Behind every good man there is a woman, and that woman was Martha Washington, man, and everyday George would come home, she would have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man, when he come in the door, man, she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.

For someone who is constantly going on about the evils of big government, social engineering, and infringement on civil liberties, he sure does support an extremist version of the war on drugs.

2012-01-04 04:06:45 PM
Pushed a bit later on the incarceration rate related to petty drug crimes, Gingrich responded, "I think the best thing is to get young people not to do drugs and then you won't be dealing with criminals that you just described."

Oh, well shiat, what an easy solution.

Hey young people. Hey. All here? Good. Please stop doing drugs. OK? OK.

And he's the GOP's idea man. This is the guy the GOP says is full of fresh ideas. Yeah.

It happens when you think you're the world's last, best hope to save Western civilization.

And any bush league pot smoker knows Washington was pro hemp.

It's too bad it he didn't consult with a knowledgeable historian before making those stupid comments.

Also pro-whiskey, pro-beer, & pro-tobacco. I don't think it's a stretch to assume that he could have been pro-marajuana (if he had known to smoke it).

Of course Washington would have crushed anyone growing MJ.

It would have cut into his whiskey profits. (see: Whiskey Tax/Rebellion)

Sound familiar?

Nah. I'd like to think that Washington would have grown it, sold it, and taxed it to supplement his Whiskey income.

As a liberal, I'm no longer going to kick Newt Gingrich when he makes outrageously stupid, inane, nonfactual, pompous and egomaniacal statements.

Also. George. Dude.

To be fair, hemp is different than marijuana. Hemp has far more industrial uses and should be sown "everywhere".

Marijuana has its own uses and should at the very least be downgraded so it can be prescribed by a doctor, but who knows if/when that will ever happen.

What did it take to get an "A" in Gingrich's history class?

"...Paul Revere's warning the British about American guns precipitated Washington's attack on Erwin Rommel's 21st Panzer Division, driving the Desert Fox deep into Georgia, where he was finally forced into the sea by a rag-tag army of misfits who knew when to take orders and when to act on their own initiative."

2012-01-04 05:17:38 PM
Why not acknowledge that George didn't think it was a big deal. Cite the fact that if they smoked it back then as casually as pipe tobacco, it probably was not much stronger than tobacco compared to what they have hybridized today.
Apples and oranges, man. Which both make good pipes in a pinch.

Everyone grew hemp back then, in fact many farmers were forced to by their government during wartime, because it was used in rope and sails for boats.

Where ole George stands out, though, is for lamenting in his diary that he had waited too long to separate the male and female plants, causing them all to grow seeds instead of delicious buds. He was definitely smoking the stuff.

As someone who is an actual professional historian, fark you Newt.

This is beyond intellectually dishonest, it's a flat-out unsupportable thesis. The concept of the federal government banning a native plant would have been beyond insane to their sensibilities, let alone one as useful as hemp. This is even MORE true in that time period, when people were willing to rebel over something as innocuous as excise taxes...trying to actually ban a crop would have been not only ill-advised, but totally unenforceable.

Jefferson, especially, would have seen it as absolutely abhorrent, given how he promoted the ideal of the self-sufficient yeoman farmer.

Newt is completely and utterly wrong, and I'd put good money down that he couldn't pass my gen-ed American history course.

he is a liar and hypocrite just like all the other republicans

big government is banning:
drugs - all drugs legal and illegal should be accessible to all citizens. period.
sex - all prostitution should be legal. period. (STFU you rtards going on about child and force prostitution, no one is talking about that)
gambling - same story
suicide / euthanasia - DUH
same sex marriage, marriage to turtle, whatever
religion ????? duh get religion out of schools and laws and courts

but nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
by small government, the gop means a government which interferes with all parts of your life

bwhahahhaahahahahahaha

well i don't know about turtle, it seem that it would be difficult to accept the wave of a fin or the expulsion of salt from the nostril as consent.

The historical timeline of when Newt thinks it's okay to smoke marijuana:

The founding of the country through the time Newt is in college - morally unacceptable and the founding fathers would have been strongly against it

The 60s, when Newt was in graduate school and smoked it - "That was a sign that we were alive and in graduate school in that era" Link (new window)

In the 80s when he is out of grad school - using marijuana during this period is "shameful and scandalous", which of course he says in the same sentence about how it was okay during the time when he did it. Suddenly, when he is out of grad school, it isn't okay to do anymore.

In the 90s - Trafficking a small amount is cause for the death penalty (new window)

Present day: he is actively campaigning about how morally wrong it is, while admitting he smoked it and it was okay when he did it.

So basically, Newt is a monster douche. This isn't mentioning having a string of affairs while impeaching Clinton for effectively the same thing.

George Washing ton may not have opposed the growing of marijuana. However, considering his course of action during the Whiskey Rebellion, he may have insisted that it be properly taxed.

Hemp is to the pot you smoke about what rubbing alcohol is to a bottle of Johnnie Walker black. Conflating the two - whether its the government doing it or subby - is just plain ridiculous

Yeah but they didn't know what the future was gonna be like with higher THC levels and that so many people would be addicted to it

Just like how they didn't know what firearms would be like in the future.

Maybe we should go back to 1700's levels of THC.....just like we should only approve of smothbore muskets.

Nobody likes to know what they're talking about any more. Facts are a buzzkill.

J. Frank Parnell: Where ole George stands out, though, is for lamenting in his diary that he had waited too long to separate the male and female plants, causing them all to grow seeds instead of delicious buds. He was definitely smoking the stuff.

Except a later entry has him putting the hemp in the river to separate the fibers. He doesn't say anything about doing it for the buds. Also he makes no mention of cultivating any for pipe smoking. There's botanical reasons for separating plants besides smoking it though.

I love delusion. I can hear the weak rationalizations now;

"what I did and what Clinton did are totally different"
"Pot wasn't the super drug it is today, so me smoking it back then is totally different"
"I'm smarter and more responsible than other people so it's ok when I do X"

in the same way that fragrant flowering tobacco plants sold in nurseries for your garden are from the standard curing and smoking varieties.

True,

...but Jefferson would be against doucebags making unsupported claims about what a founding father may or may not approve of. More so if the intention is to support a poor policy decision formed on ideoligy, restricting freedom. More so if that person is a politician who claims to be a historian.

/Jefferson was also against guessing at, or even caring about, what old dead people thought
//except for Socrates and his writing on ethics. He loved that
