For once: I support Newt Gingrich!

He's such a dedicated historian that he wants to repeat history in order to learn from it all over again.

He's doing it for the good of the country. Newt Gingrich isn't the type to screw everything up over petty personal vendettas.

/my keyboard laughed when i typed that

Truer words, PN. Truer words.

He is so very proud of his title as a historian yet he has never learned a farking thing from his own history. This is just so...delicious.

Well, in the same way a Kamikaze pilot isn't dropping out of the war.

That's the point, blackdog. Or, rather the sarcasm of the headline. I never agree with your politics, but I thought you were smarter than that.

He came in fourth place and that should be a strong signal for him to bow out, perhaps even gracefully. But in Newt's trademark style, he will do no such thing, and will instead go scorched Earth on Romney and the GOP.

I missed something, is there a younger and less cancer-ridden GOP nomination race out there?

I believe subby's meaning was that, as the article indicates, Gingrich knows he can't win, so at this point he's not running for president, he's running to destroy Mitt Romney.

In a bitter and spiteful concession speech last night in Iowa-Kanye West could do no worse-the former House speaker, who finished fourth, signaled a shift in his mission. He would no longer be running to obtain the Republican presidential nomination; he would be campaigning to obliterate Mitt Romney.

They played part of his speech on NPR, I didn't really get that impression from what I heard. I'd be more convinced if this editorialist actually put some excerpts of his speech that prove what he is suggesting.

Nope, he's gonna do something much, much worse...newt is going to use every bit of his influence to destroy Romney for no other reason other than ego. He could tear the GOP apart over this, weaken them to the point where they have no shot at Obama this year at all.

Yeah, sounds like wishful thinking on the part of the folks at Mother Jones...

Newt was his usual bitter, childish self, but this sociopath's ego won't let him quit just yet.

Considering it's not an actual quote so much as a journalists interpretation of what Newt said, I'd say it's all BS. Newt still has a good chance to pull off the nomination and he knows it. He finished fourth behind Paul who doesn't have a chance and Santorum who's managed to avoid any of Romneys negative campaign ads. He's just signaled that he's going on the offensive.

Gingrich doesn't have the money and organization to answer Romney's and Paul's negative ads. Gingrich doesn't have the money and organization to get himself on Virginia's ballot to get the 45 delegates (which he really needs). He has no organization in New Hampshire (unlike Mitt Romney) or, for that matter, most of the early primary states.

I don't think he has a chance to pull off the nomination at all.

I don't think anyone but Romney and possibly Paul got on the VA ballot, but you're right, Gingrichs biggest problem is money, but that's why he's suggesting a Santorum alliance and hoping the media will give him some free publicity via attacking Romney loudly. Gingrich has an uphill battle, to be sure, but it's by no means in the bag for Romney imho.

I'm actually having the damnedest time finding a transcript of the speech itself, why don't you take a shot at it and we can see if the author's interpretation in valid. It would seem like there are three of us here, you, me and him and his opinion is actually based on something. Do you have anything to back up that the author is wrong?

If he's trying to rectify his lack of on-the-ground organization and money by seeking an alliance with another candidate who doesn't have on-the-ground organization (Santorum bet his entire candidacy on Iowa and won, but he has no organization in any of the other states) or money (which may change as he gets a bounce in fundraising in the next week or so, but will diminish if once he starts losing big in the states where he has no organization in place). That doesn't seem wise.

I watched it and don't recall him saying anything about dropping out. But he repeatedly praised Santorum. Maybe folks took that to be an official endorsement, which would imply he was quitting. I don't think that's the case.

yep, you'd have to be pretty high on crack right now to be saying "Newt still has a good chance to pull off the nomination", unless your bar for "good" rolls around on the floor.

Bold is all opinion... although from his speeches tone it certainly sounds like this is his goal now, but, obviously, he hasn't 'dropped out' officially.

But, based on his speech, which, more or less was this....
* Thank everyone
* Race it far from over, we are going to have a "great debate" in the GOP before we debate Obama
* Give a big shoutout congrats to Santorum, and gives a snide remark about how positive Santorum's campaign was, as opposed to "others"
* Says the point of the campaign is about more than just beating Obama, lays out wide spectrum goals
* Congrats Ron Paul, but, your foreign policy thoughts are nuts
* Compares himself directly to Romney

So, I would agree that, while I don't think the speech was about going "kamikaze", yet, it is pretty clear if he decides he shouldn't keep running, he is going to back Santorum to defeat Romney. The thing will be, will he do that too late for his own liking.

Closest I've found is This video. (new window)

Haven't finished it all, but at 2 minutes in he says "I'm feeling like we're at the beginning of an extraordinary campaign" which sounds to me like he still thinks he can pull it off.
