The bulletproof glass for trains was made in Louisville, Ky. I thought it was overkill but in this case it came in handy.

Heh.

Whenever the distaffbopper does something I think is a bit 'over the top', I use that phrase on her.

This would have been a much more interesting story if two small red hatchbacks were on either side of the tracks with a rope stretched between them.

Technically, any self-propelled vehicle is a locomotive.
So, yes, it's correct. But it's pedantic and douche-y.

Nothing new. Bullet proof glass was a feature as far back as steam locomotives. Trains get shot at every day in Chicago. It is federally mandated equipment.

hammettman: Attemtped trainjack?

By someone in a rd hatchback and wielding a single shotgun? The headline was more exciting than this story. Just some jackass out screwing around, nothing to see here. If the red hatchback had been parked ON the tracks to stop the train, that would make more sense...

This wouldn't have happened if we had simply armed the engineers on the train. How can something so American, like the railroad, be against the 2nd amendment?

I think it was mandated in the late 1970's or early 1980's. GE's Dash-7 series (introduced in 1977) had distinctive oval cab windows which were just plated over when the bulletproof glass was mandated since it wasn't cost effective to get replacement windows.

Approves.

I hear the train a comin'
It's rolling round the bend
And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when,
I'm stuck in Folsom prison, and time keeps draggin' on
But that train keeps a rollin' on down to San Antone..
When I was just a baby my mama told me. Son,
Always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns.
But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die
When I hear that whistle blowing, I hang my head and cry..

I bet there's rich folks eating in a fancy dining car
They're probably drinkin' coffee and smoking big cigars.
Well I know I had it coming, I know I can't be free
But those people keep a movin'
And that's what tortures me...

Well if they freed me from this prison,
If that railroad train was mine
I bet I'd move it on a little farther down the line
Far from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stay
And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away.....

My brother's a conductor in Montana, so I'm not getting a kick out of this incident. Especially not after last year's derailment. Come to think of it, maybe he was safer working as a cop.

Well, we also need commercials on tv telling parents to hang with their kids, and if you find a purse, you should return it to it's owner, so I think we're pretty much up shiat's creek at this point in time.

Marcintosh: We need bullet proofing on trains? Seriously, on trains. WTF is wrong out there?

Maybe it's a structural part of the locomotive, is vibration- and shatter-resistant and just happens to be bulletproof as an incidental side effect. Anyway, who cares? Its use/manufacture is keeping somebody working, and the railroad has a metric farkload of money.

/"Metric farkload" is a highly scientific term. You may or may not have run across it in your graduate studies.

I would like to personally thank the Fark community for not posting any pictures from the Will Smith crapfest known as 'Wild Wild West'.

Seriously. That movie makes me want to punch myself in the nuts until I'm unconscious.
