well going to prescription only has helped. though in 2010, there was a slight bump in meth-deaths in oregon. property crime is also down.

Oregon had 467 meth-lab incidents in 2004, the year before it instituted a prescription-only law for pseudoephedrine. In 2009, the state recorded 12 meth-lab incidents, according to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration records. Mississippi adopted similar restrictions last July. Since then, there has been a nearly 70 percent reduction in meth-related cases, said Marshall Fisher, head of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. (new window)

Maybe these states are simply importing more meth from Mexico.

give me doughnuts: Citrus fruits contain acids. Why is ID not required to by oranges?

We used to take the orange peels and pinch them to squirt the acid in each others' faces when we were kids. I don't recall being arrested or ID'd when we'd pick them from the tree.

I am tired of these stupid ass laws. Quit assuming (government) we are afraid of every damn thing out there.

Gotta say I'm surprised it was that dramatic. Buying it over the counter/shoplifting seems like an inefficient way to get your supply. I would expect breakins, setting up fronts to buy in bulk, etc. would be more effective. And while I'm glad it seems to be working, I still have a problem with punishing the innocent for the deeds of the guilty.

To add to my last comment- 112 years ago, the country was going apeshiat over some actress in a play who was carried up stairs by a male actor- suggesting they were going to go to his bedroom, his bed and have sex. Apeshiat over the idea of what would happen at the end of the play when the curtain went down. Apeshiat over the IDEA.

So ... we've not progressed much, have we?

My thought, exactly. It would be cost prohibitive on any sort of scale, seeing how Ny-Quil is $5.99 or so a bottle.

this is probably true. that said, though some hippies may disagree, it's not always best to support every "buy local" campaigns. to really combat meth production we would have to track pseudoephedrine shipments globally. because unlike coke, pseudoephedrine is a biatch to make from scratch.

/of course we pretend that all the coke in this country is imported and none is lab produced
//silly dea, wanting to protect its commando squads rather than fight drug production.

You can buy drain cleaner over the internet. There's a record if they know where to look.

Diogenes

I've seen stats like A Fark Handle posted. The article I read said standard issue meth labs, which accounted for one third of U.S. meth, were down two thirds as a result of the pseudoephedrine rules. I'm inclined to dismiss that as insignificant overall because other sources can make up the difference, or a 20% cut isn't that big a deal anyway.

Correlation !=causation and all that. Because also at this time methods of manufacture "improved" to the extent that batches can be mixed up in a single soda bottle. You don't need the big trailer meth labs now. You can drive around in your car and cook it up wherever, whenever.

The bans on decongestants actually led to increased violence and lower prices. Before the bans, meth was largely cooked up by your small time neighborhood meth producer, usually in the home they lived in or an outbuilding. By banning/restricting the sale of the only effective OTC decongestant, they put those producers out of business.

In stepped the Mexican Mafia, who produces it in bulk in Mexico and then distributes it across America via organized crime. Now its cheaper due to the bulk production, and you've got more crime as the funds now go to the violent mafia, instead of your local white trash.

The good side, is there's a lot less meth lab fires for firefighters to deal with.

they are so far from being acid, that they explode when you mix them with acid.

mix drano and vinegar in a small bowel in your sink. hold your face over it.

All it means is that the small-scale producers are way down and dealers are buying from much larger distributors. Doesn't say anything about the rate of meth use in those states.

Some paper products can be used to roll joints. We need to have people show ID and sign a log book when purchasing things like pads of paper or toilet paper or paper towels or newspapers! Because if a single person uses a piece of newspaper to roll a joint then EVERYONE IN THE FARKIN STATE WILL DO IT!

Well, it is rather addictive, they will soon be requiring convicted meth users to get a prescription for certain cold medicines.

you're going to argue correlation != causation even though states that did not make it prescription-only didn't see the same decline? sure it wasn't a randomized controlled trial, but one state makes pseudoephedrine prescription-only, while other don't. that state sees a sizable drop in all meth-related arrests and injuries, while others don't. the mobile labs didn't really take off until 2008-09 and logically have lead to an increase in "labs" as they are small scale production often dumped after a single use in visible locations. (new window) meanwhile, oregon has pretty much eliminated labs because the basic ingredient is not available. (new window) having to get a prescription for cold medicine would suck, but it would be effective in preventing much of the meth problem.

Keep in mind the ones who are most likely to get busted are the ones who were most likely to be getting their raw materials retail. I doubt the street price of meth increased following the new regulations, but production shifted to a smaller number of bigger labs (likely in Mexico) which is a net benefit since a larger lab is more likely to be a commercial facility and not waste solevents by leaving them out to polute the environment.
