he was a nice guy.

He'd told her over the phone that it was "the sickest he'd ever been in his life," she said.

"Baby . . . you ain't kidding."

He was a decent guy. Had lunch with him a few years ago for a fundraiser and came away with more of "a guy who wants to fix the government" than "scummy politician" vibe from Dub G. He'll be missed around here and we need somebody to fill the roll of token candidate that isn't a religious wack job

Bummer. I liked that guy. Even voted for him in the last election.

Chronic KY gubernatorial candidate Gatewood Galbraith passes slips quickly into the abyss.

First time I met the dude, he shook my hand and said "Freedom is a muscle. If it is not regularly exercised, it will atrophy."

RIP, Gatewood. You were a good one.

I'm gonna modify that quote and use it on my girlfriend.

Ran his best campaign this past election cycle. Got a ton of support from Central Kentucky/Bluegrass area. Sadly that was the extent of his geographic outreach.

As someone who knew Gatewood it's sad to see another true warrior for our personal freedoms pass on way too soon.

Sad to hear, I met him at a few events, and he was always engaged with the person he was speaking to, very attentive and willing to stick by his ideas, not pandering for a vote. Definitely not made from the mold of a politician. His opinions on local politics will be missed.

RIP gatewood,
Voted for you in the last election

Like I said in the TF thread, though I didn't agree with a lot of what he said, he was the one politician I've met that I felt I could believe what he said is what he meant.

2012-01-04 11:10:21 AM
I met him a few times when i was running Southern Illinois NORML (SIN). We could have used a new acronym. He was a good guy.

Agreed. Also had the deepest, sub-bass voice of anyone I've met. I voted for him every chance I had!

this link just redirects to the politics tab for me. is there an actual story to read and I have a noscript glitch going on? Or are other people having the same issue?

CapnBlues: this link just redirects to the politics tab for me. is there an actual story to read and I have a noscript glitch going on? Or are other people having the same issue?

It went to the Frankfort State-Journal, but I think they changed the link.

Link (new window)

It started off as "Breaking News" on our website, then the editors made it a "regular" story. I've submitted a new link to Fark admins. Thanks for your patience!

Complete shock. I didn't agree with him politically, but enjoyed watching him work in the courtroom. Always thought he was underrated as an attorney. I'll never forget when he and Willie took their trip from LEX to Frankfort in that old beat up biodiesel. Reporters travelling alongside the car noticed the two of them smoking something and asked about it when they arrived in the capital. Classic Gatewood response: "Musta been my ceegar."

You misspelled "tokin'."

"fill the roll of token candidate that isn't a religious wack job" Just because you're Kentuckian is no reason to play into the ROLE of being an illiterate redneck.

But because you're a Texan, the role of pedantic prick fits you to a T.

This actually does give me a sad--I've voted for the guy a few times as he was the only sane candidate running, and he did seem to have his head screwed on right for the most part (and as others have noted, he was pretty much the sole candidate that DIDN'T pander to the theocratic religionationalists in the state on some level).

2012-01-04 12:11:55 PM
Good man with good intentions, one of a rare few. World's a little poorer today.

It's 4:19, got a minute?

Gonna miss him.
Helped campaign for him waaaay back in the late 80s.

If he's cremated, will it count as going out baked?

/Shout out to Lexington

Chronic KY candidate

Sounds frigid.

There's only one fitting way for Frankfort to memorialize Mr. Galbraith: legalize it.

Met him the day after the last debate fin November. Super great guy, voted for him every time I could. He seemed to be in good health. Really sad to hear.

2012-01-04 01:03:15 PM
Last time I talked to him he told me this would be his last run. I don't know if he knew how prophetic that statement would be. He was a good guy.

2012-01-04 01:09:36 PM
I Always like Gatewood, one of the few men that spoke honestly when he was running for something. And while most of us knew he probably wouldn't win, we were happy to vote for somebody that you knew were he stood, and that should they get elected wouldn't sell you out.

2012-01-04 01:20:44 PM
For those of you who don't know Gatewood, here's an excerpt from his autobiography:

But if you did not know me or what I stand for, and if I only had thirty seconds to get your vote, I would have only one question to ask you.

And if you answer this question one way, I've got your vote, no matter what else you think about me.

And if you answer this question the other way, I don't think you understand the question.

The question is, 'Did our forefathers' generation hit the beaches of Normandy and Iwo Jima so that we would have to pee in a cup to hold a job in America?'

The introduction of the police state methods into American culture is fatal to our freedom. The solutions to our problems lie in the words of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln not Mr. Yamamoto or Helmut Schmidt.

And let's get this straight. I'm not a racist and I'm not xenophobic. I'm a Nationalist.

I'll trade with other countries, I'll have lunch with them and I'll play golf with them. But until they adopt a Constitution and Bill of Rights that gives their own citizens the rights and freedoms we enjoy, they are not our political peers.

If we abandon our principals of individual freedom and dignity, then our liberty and right to self-determination will abandon us. Our standard of living will fall and our jobs will evaporate as our children and grandchildren are thrown open to competition in the workplace with Four Billion other people on the planet, many of whom will work all day for a bowl of rice and a mat to sleep on.

That is not my vision for Kentucky and its citizens. My vision is rooted in the traditions of our Founding Fathers.

As to the size of government, Thomas Jefferson said, 'The least government is the best government.'

As to the role of government, Abraham Lincoln said, 'Prohibition strikes at the very heart of the principles on which this country was founded.'

And as far as having to pee in a cup to hold a job, I look to the words of General George Patton. 'Screw you Nazis!'

2012-01-04 01:29:05 PM
Not just we Kentuckians, but the whole world has lost somebody great today.

2012-01-04 01:46:09 PM
Did the KY make it easier to pass?

This...his was a clear voice in a shiatstorm of Kentucky politics.

So, this was written in the '90s then? The future tense is the only thing wrong.

If this is the NORML Guy from Kentucky I'm thinking it is, he came to Michigan and talked about how the government was trying to cut his brake lines.

/it was the Galbraith that posed holding a M60 and a bunch of ammo
//he was also associated with Rainbow Farms up here before we shut it down

Gatewood and my mother used to alternate driving myself and his daughter to school in the morning when we were growing up. He'd always drive up in boxers, an undershirt, flip-flops, and his famous hat no matter what the weather was doing outside (5:00 am, not a typical public school). I remember him once farting in the car and then flipping the child locks on the windows so we couldn't roll them down, laughing all the way. Though this doesn't exactly paint him in the most attractive light on the surface, he was a man full of life and whimsy. I haven't seen much of him in several years, but Kentucky has lost a great source of intelligence, passion, and dedication.
