Thought of this after reading the article.

We Americans have a disturbing trend of turning our lunch into pets.

Cat/dog? Most other places eat it. The native americans would eat it. But they're cute and furry, so we don't.
Guinea pig? Its a staple food source for millions, its actively ranched like cattle (only on a smaller scale). But, its small and furry, so we don't eat it.
Pigs? What, you say we eat those, not keep them as pets? True, we do still eat them, but pot-belly pigs are becoming ever more popular as pets. Eventually we'll stop eating them entirely.

Its only a matter of time before other delicious animals, such as duck, quail, and people are taken off the market because they make acceptable pets.

Actually, they just dig a hole in the dirt floor of their huts and throw some leaves and grasses in until they need dinner, but the thought of trying to herd hundred of guinea pigs across the plains is pretty funny!

And yes, that picture is from Yucay, Peru, where they are raising those for food. Hell, those are probably guinea pig cookpots on the table there. Its like building a McDonald's or a Ryan's next to a cattle ranch. Let your food know where it's going! =D

Actually the weird American idea is that food animals and pet animals are separate. It leads to a disturbing tendency to mistreat the former and spoil the latter.

Those guinea pigs in Edymnion's post look like they're living a life better than most wild animals or even neglected pets in the U.S. They get far more room to move around than our chickens. It's inexcuseable that we abuse our food animals simply because they're a "resource".

Eating a beloved animal is hardly unprecendented, even in modern western history. Antarctic expeditions have been known to eat their dogs -- even with other food available -- when the situation called for them to be shot. They'd literally weep as they shot their best friends and then stew them up that evening. And frankly, animals that live good lives* generally taste better. Contrary to popular belief, Kobe cows are not fed beer. Rather, they're fed with custom grain mixtures and kept in spacious, well-ventilated pens. Basically they're treated as well as the happiest pets in the world. The only thing arguably inhumane about their lives is that they're prematurely ended.

*Clarification: GOOD lives. This is why wild animals can taste bad. Often times, being a wild animal sucks.

Auugh! I went to a hot pot restaurant in Bejing last year. As the menu was completely in Mandarin I just pointed at the first meat-like picture I found. I could have been eating poisoned cat!

It did taste like crap, that's for sure.
