Well, the Muslim Brotherhood once looked at the US in a lascivious way, so now they have to get married

2012-01-04 09:30:16 AM
I'm all in favor of engaging them, say with a few 500 lb. bombs and maybe some napalm.

/religion of peace baby.

It would probably be better to create a hostile situation with them, right?

When will Fark block NYT links from being submitted like they do with WSJ and their paywall?

/could not read the article
//assume it's about how the administration has chosen diplomacy over war. no surprise there

They used to. It was their primary example of what not to submit.

Might as well, it's better then what the United States had been supporting.

We need to give the new political party in power in Egypt a chance to make things better there; and it won't be something that can be done over night. Hell, the U.S. has been in Iraq for almost a decade and the moment we left the place exploded. The Muslim Brotherhood has said they would like to setup a democracy. Let them give it a shot!

Violence and sanctions are not the correct path here for dealing with Egypt. Support and aid will win them over towards begin partners down the road.

Please brotherhood, break up, keep mooslims fighting and sparring all over their oils producing nations. The last thing we need is y'all making peace and then cutting ties with OPEC to sell that shiat on your own. We know you'd jack up the price on us or worse, cut us off. That would be some real terror.

I thought the new caliphate was born on August 4, 1961, in Kenya, and then sent to Mars for the Muslim Chrononaut Caliphate Meetings in the 1980s. Are you telling me I was lied to?

Well, you know, making enemies of Islamic groups, radicalizing them and giving them a big enemy to point at has worked so, so well.

Ah, now that's the ignorant, inflammatory Fark I remember! Who needs history books? We'll just make shiat up, or least make ridiculously false equivalencies.

Specifically, we'll ignore the fact that Chamberlain was elevated to power by a populace devastated by the War To End All Wars, and that if he hadn't come back from Munich in 1938 with "peace in our time", the Brits wouldn't have rested until his head was on a pike.

The Muslim Brotherhood isn't a remotely terrorist organization, they're totally committed to Democracy and their leadership is comprised of mostly working professionals like lawyers and doctors. They're basically just like Islamic Republicans. I don't particularly like them, but it would be absolutely ridiculous not to engage them in talks.

The best way to fight radical Islam is to let it destroy itself. This is an ideology that left on its own to become more extreme, will attack Muslims of other sects, stifle its own society, and kill international trade. Left alone, it'll implode. Ideologies like this thrive best under attack, when they can convince their followers all problems are due to the infidels, instead of the fundamentalists.

Let's see how much Egyptians like hard-core Islamists after they tank their economy.

What's it like to live in constant fear of imaginary enemies? Doesn't that get stressful and wearisome?

You do realize that most Muslims practice Islam the way most Christians practice Christianity, right? The Muslim Brotherhood is Islamist, but of the moderate variety. They're like the Muslim equivalent of Presbytarians. The fundies you are imagining them to be are groups like the Wahhabists, the equivalent of fire-and-brimstone abortion-doctor-murder-advocating gay-hating Evangelicals and Baptists. That's NOT these guys. The Islamic fundies hate the Muslim Brotherhood because they aren't fundie enough for them.

Asking the Egyptians to have a completely secular government run entirely by non-muslim secularists when most of the country is Muslim would be equivalent to asking the USA to be run mostly by non-christian secularists when most of the country is Christian.

Well, "Moderate" is really a matter of perspective, but you're right in that they are far less conservative than the Salafists. Also, they won a minority (The largest minority, but a minority) of votes so far, so they're looking to form a coalition and they're talking about doing it with more liberal Islamicists.

Naturally, the secularists are completely out of it, but that was never really a likely option.

And Cataholic should pay attention to the difference between making concession after concession to a vocally belligerent power and recognizing the legitimacy of a government.

Look up Afghani "dancing boys". That comparison is more apt than you know, especially given that in both cases it is a revolting practice sanctioned by a small minority of the followers of the religion and reviled by the remainder.
