How many times can we actually "discover" this "lost" sea star? I've seen it discovered like 10 times in the past five years.

I wonder what this unknown species of pale octopus tastes like.

Like rotten eggs, ammonia, and Darwin's laughter when the poisonous levels of
hydrogen sulfide kill the blog writer.

Still, though: really cool.

It was a terrible, indescribable thing vaster than any subway train-a shapeless congeries of protoplasmic bubbles, faintly self-luminous, and with myriads of temporary eyes forming and un-forming as pustules of greenish light all over the tunnel-filling front that bore down upon us, crushing the frantic penguins and slithering over the glistening floor that it and its kind had swept so evilly free of all litter.

Didn't find the telepathic whale I see. Or at least the 100-some-odd year-old remains of it, along with lots of prehistoric creatures around a tunnel through the ice...

It is with interminable dread that I relay the sightings of my recent expedition, and do so only as a warning to those who might endeavor to ascertain what eldritch mystery lies beneath this foetid ice, in its half-forgotten Cyclopean home. It was not entirely unlike something that I cannot bring myself to describe, and somewhat suggestive of a thing whose properties I am wholely incapable of describing. I think I was asleep, hallucinating, and there is therefore no need to describe it anyway. But when I woke up, I found something in my hand suggesting my experience was real.

Now pay me money, suckahs.

So did noah have a volcanic font on the ark to provide the necessary chemical reactions for pairs of these animals?

clancifer: Sure they look really cool now, but just wait until oil is found right beneath their floor.

Well I was kind of wondering if they eat chemicals and live off of the planets heat what waste products do they generate? Are they better or worse at converting chemicals to something then say the current algae that produce bio-fuel? Are there any genes in those critters that we could replicate and implant in a more productive creature to generate bio-fuel?

This is amazing. All snark aside, I never tire at how incredibly diverse this world of ours is, and what amazing things it contains.

2012-01-04 01:06:09 PM
Pssh. This is just in the ocean near Antarctica.

Antarctica itself has some lakes under miles of ice. That is where the truly weird is though scientists are so far being careful about breaching such things sealed away hundreds of millions of years ago. They have fears of contaminating them or being contaminated.
