I really hate it when people treat comedians like prophets and Bill Hicks really gets the worst of it. People seem to forget that Bill Hicks was a comedian and that his bits are intentionally over-the-top for comedic effect. His bits contain a "grain of truth" that can be used to spawn a deeper and more intelligent conversation on important topics. His bits are not "truth".

Great? Not so much. Admittedly I don't get the cult of Hicks. Sure he had some funny bits but many times he, like Lenny Bruce in his later years, came off as simply an angry douche. Also, if you are sporting a mullet you shouldn't throw stones.

I have to say that smoking his way to an early and painful death by pancreatic cancer was over-the-top for comedic effect. I loled nonetheless.

No, Hedburg had a very different kind of comedy. Hicks did rip off Dennis Leary's album No Cure for Cancer, almost joke for joke.

Hicks, Carlin, and Hedberg, You're all greatly missed.

Yeah...I've always thought Bill Hicks was overrated. I definitely get that what he said is often amusing and he had clever observations, but he was never really laugh-out-loud funny.

Bill Hicks on Dennis Leary - "I have a scoop for you. I stole his act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and to really throw people off, I did it before he did"

This guy really wants to be George Carlin...

Eh, when he started going into conspiracy shenanigans about JFK I had to stop watching.

Yes, yes, I'm a sheeple for not believing every zany theory that requires thousands of experts to side with the government on stuff. Frankly, I'd almost rather be a sheeple at that point, given that conspiracies that deep would be impossible to overcome and we are all farked regardless. No point worrying about that kind of stuff then :P

Enthusiast: I assume Bill Hicks understands the difference, and it wasn't his intention to mislead you.

I take it you don't know a lot about die-hard Hicks fans. They venerate the guy like he was some sort of divine figure and everything that came out of his mouth was gospel.

It's very bizarre considering the types of things Bill Hicks actually said and I have to wonder what he'd think of the cult that sprung up after his death...

Whodat: simply an angry douche

I've never been able to figure out if he eventually convinced himself that he really was the sort of genius his fans thought him to be or if he just sort of played along, but, either way, I still found him quite amusing.

he is just a good comic. nothing mystical.

Is there any footage from the Dennis Leary roast when Lenny Clark gave Dennis the carton of smokes and told him it was a present from Bill Hicks? Word is that Leary freaked out and demanded the footage be taken out of the final edit.

One of my favorite Hicks videos - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc6yCinSlZk

It's a win/win, Kevin Matthews interviewing Hicks. Some of the best interviews Matthews did was with Bill.

His angry young man persona was much more entertaining than Carlin's angry old man persona. Maybe because at one point Carlin (like NFL analyst John Madden) was brilliant, then the older they got, the less I could stand them.

I wish I found Hicks funny. You all seem to get such enjoyment out of him.

I'll tell you what, Dennis Leary may have ripped him off joke for joke, but as far as delivery and timing go, Leary is a better joke teller than Hicks.

The obsession with Hedburg mystifies me as well. His comedy reads so much better than it sounds.

Awesome Hicks quote:

The world is like a ride in an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. The ride goes up and down, around and around, it has thrills and chills, and it's very brightly colored, and it's very loud, and it's fun for a while. Many people have been on the ride a long time, and they begin to wonder, "Hey, is this real, or is this just a ride?" And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and say, "Hey, don't worry; don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride." And we ... kill those people. "Shut him up! I've got a lot invested in this ride, shut him up! Look at my furrows of worry, look at my big bank account, and my family. This has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill the good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok ... But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it any time we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.
