WRONG!

INCORRECT!

Stupid teens/kids making stupid posts in chat does not equal "game play"

Foul, flag on the play.

God, I hate articles like this.

"Oh no, a slave in a video game is mistreated, let's write an article about it!"

Oh look, butthurt over a plot device intended to make you as evil as possible so you can play the game as you want.

GAT_00: Oh look, butthurt over a plot device intended to make you as evil as possible so you can play the game as you want.

This is the point of the game. You don't gain "light points" for torturing or killing people. You are evil.

And if this guy is pissed at the general chat in the game. What a farking non-story.

Sexuality, violence, and slavery all turned into a sadistic little game for boys is not the way to go about it.

yeah, but I hear that's like...150 dark side pts in one go. totally worth it!

I have no idea what being a female gamer must be like,

Why don't you ask the ones making Sith Warriors and playing around with all the "sick" options you can do to Vette? You're worse than the farking dumbass teenage boys who spam general chat with "hurr durr tits or gtfo". There's little need to differentiate between "female" or "male" gamers. A gamer is a gamer. I've had 12 years of wasting away countless hours of my life on various multiplayer games filled with the nerdiest of nerds and knew from the start that gender is absolutely never an issue until you make it one. Sure there's the random guy or two who wants to take it too far when he catches the faintest whiff of a girl through his monitor. On that same line, I've never encountered a game without a convenient "ignore" function. So who gives a crap?

Sure, the dudes are always full cover and realistically proportioned.

Mentalpatient87: This sounds like the kind of thing that is optional and only done at the players choice...

It is. When I played the same character in the beta, I didn't shock her, eventually I let her go and she ended up my most loyal friend. Unfortunately in the beta you were a bit hamstrung as far a gear went if you were playing a "Neutral Side" Sith.I don't know if that was changed in the release version of the game.

Ha funny you should say that, I just started playing that like a month ago (love BG/ID), I ran around with Mort looking for the corpse-collector guy, kept getting easily killed and sort of lost interest. I like the fact that you are on Sigil but damn that game seems unwieldy.

Based on this? At least check ESRB's website. They rate all games, their ratings are on the game packaging, and they tell you why they rate them as such.

And if all else fails, play it yourself first. When we were kids my parents would check movies themselves before taking us. Don't just rely on articles written by people trying to gain hits.

The Old Republic's ESRB page. (new window)

Hmm. I guess I could try this, IF I DIDN'T GET A 48-HOUR BAN FOR "MISUSING THE AUCTION HOUSE" (read: buying out all of the 340 missions with my pre-nerf slicing cash, and relisting them to make a profit). One of my guildies got banned for mailing a shiatload of cash to a new character, and multiple people have been banned for going to higher-level planets to loot unattended chests.

2012-01-04 04:00:50 AM
I have to give Bioware props for actually making a game where "evil" is a legitimate choice that doesn't just consist of being a dick. The Sith in the game are fairly fleshed out and good v. evil is framed for them as weakness v. power. As others have said, no one is forcing the player to do terrible things and it is totally viable to play on the "bad guy's team" as a "good guy."

Wow, that's ridiculous, there goes my main reason to ever play an MMO.
Making loads of fake money from people making bad financial decisions with their own fake money was why I played wow for a couple years.

Yeah, thats another checkmark in the con column for switching to TOR... Blizz thankfully is pretty damn laissez faire if youre not actually scamming people or hacking or something. Just had to log on and check my bank toons stats, total gold aquired: 652,501, most gold ever owned: 221,632, and thats only since they implemented stat tracking last expansion. I am Azeroths 1%.

Back when I tried out the first sims the first thing I did upon finding out that you could torture them to death was torture a few to death. It doesn't make you a bad person. Sometimes you find out you can do things, so you try them out.

The only mildly annoying thing is the easiest way to avoid the people being idiots on chat is to never talk. That's fine on tdm, but sucks for an objective based game.

2012-01-04 05:08:49 AM
FTA: It's the objectification of those women that becomes really problematic, and games do it all the time (look at the evolution of Lara Croft or do a Google image search for Kusami from Dead or Alive and you'll see what I mean) ....
I think there's room for games to treat their female audiences with respect and still be sexy - at least as far as games can be sexy. If the industry really want to be taken seriously, and capture the growing female market, they're going to have to try a lot harder.

What female gamer would be put off by playing as a gorgeous woman within a video game? I don't see how a female would be put off with that, or how it has anything to do with warding off a female market--never once have I thought, "fark this, this game is sexist and contributes to my negative self-image" while I played as Laura Croft, shootin' dinos in the face. I would probably like the game less if I got to walk around, solving puzzles, as a 5'2 150lb character with body type of an average american woman.

A very rare JRPG example would be the PS2 game "Soul Nomad and the World Eaters".
Dear god, the Demon Path of that game is just horrible.
Physical rape, mental rape, genocide, child trafficking, killing children, killing your allies, and some other stuff that is terrible but contains spoilers. That path makes you feel really, really bad.
It's still pretty good, though, and has some great comedic relief.

Before I quit WoW, one of my three main toons was ... a female dwarf Death Knight (I picked it because it had an unusual glitch at the time -- no glowing blue eyes). Undead, short, fat and ugly. But sassy. I think I was the only one on the server. At the DK starter zone there were four gnomes, all of which were bummed because I came up with something original. And I only saw three other fem dwarf DKs in the dungeon finder before I quit. And I roleplayed her constantly drunk, which made tanking/attacking interesting in Wrath, stumbling towards the next group of baddies.

And for the fishing contests, I'd roll out in the straw hat and a revealing chainmail outfit I discovered while mining. Or a tux and eyepiece. Got plenty of macros from Horde players, most of them nauseous. Like female orcs, cows or trolls are anything to look at. And I was sure popular whenever some holiday event required players to do something with a female dwarf.

Btw, recently played APB Reloaded and thought about something similar to this article. My female criminal, a Satanic, freckled ginger clad in either a leather jacket, snakeskin pants and flats or a hoodie, sunglasses, sweats and tatooed bare feet (modern cultist look, since there's no robes or sandals) is a freaking Puritan compared to the legions of players running female enforcer or criminal characters around with just pasties, panties and stockings.

Also, APB Reloaded is a mediocre shooter/GTA III wannabe, frustrating at times and for some goddamn reason, I keep playing it just to kill time and be creative with the car, tatoo and clothing decals.

2012-01-04 06:45:13 AM
The gaming industry still has it in their collective heads that targeting teenage boys is the only way to sell games despite the growing number of girl gamers (and non-teenagers, for that matter.)

Followed shortly by...

Other games, like Half-Life 2 and the Uncharted franchise do a much better job.)

Apparently the industry does not have collective heads.
