... and cancelling shows like community ...
TommyymmoT
2012-01-04 02:07:17 AM
The industry has lost a big part of it's core audience to the video game industry.
Boo Hoo. I wonder how that whole cutting production costs to the bone thing is working out for them.
I think most gamers would rather lick a light socket than watch "The Bachelor, "Real Housewives of East Hell Arkansas" or shows about meter maids, garbage men, fake auctions, and white trash bounty hunters doing reenactments.
They're not going to get that audience back anytime soon.
Even 3D is a bust, especially in the home market.
"If you can't make it good, make it in 3D" isn't working.

Good shows migrated to cable.
Shorter seasons, more creative control for the producers and writers, the ability to get by with lower ratings... all of these things help contribute to cable shows being better quality than what Network TV airs.

There's still some great TV... Downton Abbey was awesome on PBS. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Archer are HILARIOUS. Modern Family surely has somebody you might enjoy watching/bathing. Breaking Bad, Madmen, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire all at least watchable. 'Louis' and 'Curb Your Enthusiasm" pretty damn cool, huh? Simpson's and Futurama still not bad even if South Park and Family Guy seem a lot more 'Miss' than 'Hit', lately. TCM Classic Movies runs commercial free movies 24-7. All the Encore Channels feature TV Classics from every genre and a wide variety of more recent movie choices. History Channel, Biography, Discovery Channel can still produce enough original programs to warrant an occasional view. Seriously, FARK all 'reality' TV in the ass. I can't even stomach most of the 'talent' competitions. I actually get out and hunt and fish all over Louisiana and Florida, so I've met all the 'crusty' fisherman, shrimpers, gator catchers I'll ever need to know. And a big shout out to all you wrasslin' and pseudo-celebrity viewers. Clearly you deserve one another. Seriously, go fark your sisters, pets and children you retarded dingleberries. I understand 'guilty pleasures' like Adult Swim, Speed, UCF, or even C.O.P.S. (that is, if you wanna see what the rest of the family has been up to or if you secretly want cop dick in your ass/mouth) but honest to God, If your over 14 and still getting a hard-on for Wrestlemania, Dog the Bounty Hunter or the Duggars. I can assure you that your entire life has been a twister in the trailer court and Wal-Mart is your temple.

More remakes, indeed. Take a look at two shows ABC introduced this week:
Jane by Design
In the series premiere of this drama, a teenager (Erica Dasher) with a keen sense of style is mistaken for an adult and given a job as an assistant to a powerful fashion executive (Andie McDowell), so she plays along and secretly juggles high-school life with a new career.
Sound familiar?

(new window)
And then there's
Work It
:
When unemployed best friends Lee and Angel land sales jobs by dressing up as women, they realize they have a lot to learn if they're going to keep up the ruse.
Sounds a little like this:

I 'get' drag humor. Milton Berle and Monty Python were silly fun. This is an anal wart ... a painful discharge that cannot be viewed by mortal eyes. It is fetid puke with bits of tampon and sink-clogged baboon's ass hairs. Surely, the writers/producers of this show are related to ABC programming execs or have photos of said execs eating puppy entrails off the naked asses of albino altar boys.

I am sick of reality and cop shows which seem to be what the big three still push. I have been watching a lot of Asian TV shows online. What I found I liked is that most are short shows with 16 to 50 episodes or longer ones with 50+ episodes (I prefer the shorter ones). In the US this method could open up more job opportunities for actors and those who provide support to the shows. This also opens up more types of shows that can be shown on TV.
I cut off my cable because I got tired of paying for infomercials and the same things being shown on different channels.

It all comes down to this. You have over 100 choices each half hour every day in what to watch. You can only watch one show ( record others I know) , but that is like the NFL fan base that expects its home team to win every week. They all can't win and all shows can't be watched. Many great shows have been cancelled because of time slot roulette of going against monster hits. That reality.

The answer to Hollywood's woes is clearly more Adam Sandler movies.
How about a one with Adam Sandler and Jack Black who are in a homosexual relationship, and do not realize they are long-lost fraternal twin brothers. The twist is that they, as a homosexual couple, are trying desperately to adopt a child in the state of Mississippi. The title could be "The Brothers Santorum".

So they dont think $80+/mo cable TV prices or $15 per movie prices are causing some of the problem? You know how many books I wish they would make into movies but they shovel pure garbage out? or remake already damn good movies.

As far as movies are concerned, I'm not enthusiastic anymore about the new releases. There used to be a few movies every year that I looked forward to seeing. Now if there's one in a year, it's an anomaly.
I dropped satellite a long time ago & don't miss it. The only new TV show I've been watching obsessively (and that's via the FX website) is "American Horror Story". Other than that... bleh.
As a rule, the stuff I look at on the tube is 70% Netflix / 20% rented DVDs / 10% other internet content.

The depressing thing is that Discovery (which, for a time, was the only channel
that could do anything remotely interesting with the 'reality' genre) has started
to cannibalize itself: AMERICAN GUNS is SONS OF GUNS with 2 females and
somewhat less of a redneck vibe; RAGIN' CAJUNS is simply DEADLIEST
CATCH with fewer teeth (not to mention that it rips off 2 shows from History
channel: SWAMP PEOPLE and BIG SHRIMPIN'), and the worst has to be the
one I just saw a commercial for: BERING SEA GOLD, which just reeks of high
concept idiocy.
Given that both DIRTY JOBS and MYTHBUSTERS are getting on in years they
must be nearing the end of their useful lifespan, and we can only look for more
such idiocy.

I have a TV. Last night as I was flipping around the channel for some background noise while I played SWTOR, I stumbled across an episode of Bones. "I like Bones," I remember saying, only to see that the show was 91% dedicated to attempting to launch another show about some "Finder" dude. A whole episode promo piece that replaces the show I wanted to watch with a show that the Network will want me to watch later. Thanks, TV.

Between Netflix, torrents for a few newer shows, and video games I canceled my cable a year or two ago and haven't missed it once. Not only that but since I don't have cable I don't see ads for the next new big movies so I don't get excited and go to the movies as much anymore either.

I got an idea.. Get rid of all the crappy cop dramas. There are way to many of them. You can combine all the CSI's into 1 show. And take turns which one will be shown each week. Los Vagas one week, Miami the next, new York after that then repeat. NCIS can stay the way it is.. seeing that its actually a good show. Law and Order needs to have the same thing that CSI should do. Combine them all into a Meta show and take turns on which one is shown each week.

Why do people always quote remakes as a sign that hollywood is full of crap. If you think that is true I have a surprise for you, Hollywood has always been about remakes. I mean The Wizard of Oz from 1939 was a remake, Ben Hur and the Ten Commandments bothwith Charleton Heston were remakes. The Magnificant Seven from 1960 was a remake of The Seven Samurai. When hitchcock came to Hollywood he remade the Man Who Knew Too Much (which he had previously done in 1934). So movie remakes are by no means a new thing.

I am not sure if you realize this or not but there is currently only one Law and Order show in production (Law and Order SVU). All the rest were cancelled over the last few years.
