If you are down when your elbow hits, I call that a catch.

Stranger things have happened... just this year in bowl games, in fact. Don't throw in the towel yet

TonnageVT: That's the ball game

Michigan's kicker has some misses in him.

2012-01-03 11:57:32 PM
Go fumble returned for a TD!

Over_Zealously_Apathetic: ThatGuyGreg: Over_Zealously_Apathetic: I think he landed out of bounds.

That elbow hits in-bounds for sure.

VTGremlin: Over_Zealously_Apathetic: I think he landed out of bounds.

No, clearly his elbow hit first. It's either going to be ball hit the ground or it didn't.

I didn't think touching an elbow counted...but all for moot.

Hate to see a game end on a call like that. After that FG miss...

Anything from the elbow and above is considered down, just like from the knee up. However, you also have to have complete control of the ball when the elbow is down - if the ball hits the ground/helps you catch the ball during the time when the elbow hits the ground, then it's an incomplete pass.

So much bullshiat. You can't overturn that TD. /sigh

I can't be mad at the kicker, he's taken us this far.

If anyone can fall back on their kicker, it must be Michigan..

Michigan deserves to miss this for shiatty play calling.

Funny thing is, this game doesn't count for shiat.

Goddamn lack of playoff.

I think it was a TD then. Oh well. I'll take the win.

Yay Big Ten!

2012-01-03 11:58:56 PM
And the refs strike again...

Quite the theme in this year's bowl games. That looked an awful lot like a catch to me. The ground in no way aided or hampered his control of the ball. What a shame. Too many games with really flaky calls this year.

Meh.

That's what I saw; the end of the ball clearly hit the ground and it seemed like it helped him control it. Admittedly I'm biased as well, so take it for what it's worth. I honestly thought they would let it stand due to the call on the field and I don't think I could argue too much with it if they did.

Hoke looks pissed off.

2012-01-03 11:59:54 PM
After all that I thought the Hokies still had a shot. Some bad luck and horrible decisions/penalties cost them the game. Michigan did fark all all game except not make mistakes and they won because of it. Congrats to their fans, enjoy the win.

2012-01-03 11:59:59 PM
Wasnt the kicker for VT a practice squad guy who only got to suit up because the normal kicker got sent home? Thats a really tough spot to put him in, and you cant really be mad, the guy got them to overtime in the first place.

2012-01-04 12:00:01 AM
sorry hokie fans, if you gotta lose, lose in OT when your player get a TD the replay missed.

The ball didn't move at all. All you can do is let the call stand, whatever it was. There was clearly no evidence to overturn whatever the call on the field was.

It doesn't really mater if it helps him control it - just the ball touching the field is grounds for an incomplete pass. Had the guy caught it while upright, then fell to the ground and the ball hits, then it would have been a touchdown because the man had firm possession throughout the fall. Because of the circumstances between the catch, the player, and the ball hitting the ground, it was an incomplete pass

Ugly, ugly win, embarrassing win. But the difference from 2010, this year they won. Every time last year they would lose these games.

Go BLUE!

It's a good goddamn thing the Giants won, or I'd be headed for the nearest bridge.

Another season, another bowl loss... such is life. How long until pitchers & catchers report?

The kicker is probably the only guy on VT's special teams that did anything to help them. Look to the rest of them (and some playcalling) for the reason it actually even went into OT.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree. Replay has led to some interesting outcomes in both NCAA and pros.

A win is a win is a win. I guess.

Refs robbed VT in this game. Tons of bogus penalties. That final TD catch was good. I think Michigan and Ohio State are my most hated teams in NCAAF.

I meant the same thing but worded it differently; the ground can't help you make the catch. The ball can hit the ground in the process of making a catch if the receiver has it completely controlled/
