On the national political front, Newt Gingrich, responding to a groundswell of encouragement from the voices in his head, reveals that he is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination. He quickly gains the support of the voter who had been leaning toward Ross Perot.

Not much has changed.

Good thing he's a funny writer.

So Andy passed the curmudgeon stick to Dave, huh?

2012-01-03 05:24:28 PM
So, when is Dave Barry planning on taking over Andy Rooney's old post at the Get Off My Lawn You Damn Kids Desk over at 60 Minutes?

special20: So Andy passed the curmudgeon stick to Dave, huh?

In other news, "The Curmudgeon Stick" would be a great name for a band.

I am not making this up.

Dave Barry has never been quite this depressing.

Fubini: Dave Barry has never been quite this depressing.

It was a tad bleak, wasn't it?

I thought Dave Barry died in the great stupid purge of aught-six..

2012-01-03 05:34:02 PM
Dave Barry was the James "Kibo" Parry of the 1980s, who in turn was the _______ of the 1990s.

2012-01-03 05:34:22 PM
When as old as him your are, look as good you will not.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: It was a tad bleak, wasn't it?

Just a bit.

I do have to say, though, that over the last month or so I feel as if I've been seized by optimism. I'm not totally sure why. It's not that everything is great, but I'm regaining faith that things will eventually get better.

funkyeuph: So, when is Dave Barry planning on taking over Andy Rooney's old post at the Get Off My Lawn You Damn Kids Desk over at 60 Minutes?

Dave Barry is 64 years old.

Let that sink in for a minute.

2012-01-03 05:35:53 PM
My local columnists are sadly lacking in the "booger joke" department. Dave set that bar too high.

Hey, at least you're doing better than Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

I think a Kibology reference on Fark can only mean the end of times

2012-01-03 05:46:06 PM
Dave Barry is starting to sound a bit like Lewis Black.

2012-01-03 05:46:32 PM
He's had his funny moments, for sure. He kind of slacked off a bit when he started setting up his quick-and-dirty closing line in the first paragraph and you could tell what it would be after reading that first paragraph. It must be tough having to be funny all the time, though, so I don't really fault him too much for it.

2012-01-03 05:48:13 PM
I remember when Dave Barry used to be funny.

/getting old

2012-01-03 05:52:21 PM
Completely skipped:

Fukushima
Floods in midwest
Fires in Texas
Kim Jon Il
...

Boring.

Dave Barry isn't funny, and never was.

I've never understood why he gets the respect he does. He sucks.

On another note, JibJab's 2011 (new window) entry was better than their last couple of years.

In before the "I'm too hip to laugh at Dave Barry" crowd....dammit!

/He's not Jon Stewart when it comes to political analysis, but he's still fairly amusing.

Total reincarnation of Andy "The Brows" Rooney.
Pffft!

Read an Andy Rooney book one weekend. He was funny until then, afterwards he just sounded like he needed a fresh tube of Vagisil.

So now Fark is linking to some dude's crappy blog?

Well, that totally summed up my reaction. Brilliant!

Dave Barry's old stuff was funny. He wasn't PJ O'Rourke, but he still had the libertarian-observation humor going (Libertarian comedians are the closest you'll ever get to a conservative comedian we'll ever see.)

Unfortunately, libertarian comedians don't always age well. Enough time of observational style comedy causes you to slip into cynical curmudgeonry. The problem is that these comedians go from poking fun for the entertainment of their smart audiences (as they perceive them) to the point where they become so preachy they assume they are the only smart ones in the room.

So far the Daily Show and Colbert Report have surpassed Dave Barry many times over in humor. Hopefully Stewart and Colbert maintain enough distance from their subjects to not fall into the curmudgeon trap.

In political news, Texas Gov. Rick Perry announces that he will seek the Republican nomination with a goal of "restoring the fundamental American right to life, liberty, and a third thing."

Gold, Jerry. Comedy GOLD!

Not his strongest stuff, but there were a few laughs

2012-01-03 07:17:00 PM
Less funny, but I think out of fear.

Every time he'd use hyperbole, reality would turn it up a notch and do something even more ridiculous.

He's just trying to save us.

following the discovery that the Spanish government, having run completely out of money, secretly sold the Pyrenees to China and is now separated from France only by traffic cones.

His mentor and former boss at the Herald, Gene Weingarten at the Washington Post, is much funnier (in my opinion).

Still, there was this bright spark, one that made me laugh: This was a year in which the cast members of Jersey Shore went to Italy and then - in an inexcusable lapse of border security - were allowed to return.

I saw Barry speak at my alma matter this year. Haven't laughed so hard in ages.

I thought this particular column was funny, but not his best.

This is the best year in review so far "Charlie Brooker's 2011 Wipe" (new window)
