And they call a wrench a "spanner" too!

WTF IS A SPANNER?!? IT WRENCHES, NOT SPANS!

To be fair: That white circle with the black bar and the blue circle with the red X aren't exactly... uh... easy to understand.

I thought "spanner" only applied to what we'd call a monkeywrench, i.e., one with adjustable tines, which could be used to span nuts of various sizes.

idk.

US roadsigns are pretty straitforward and I'm convinced that two thirds of drivers here don't understand them.

It's because all the signs are in European and the British are still thinking in their native tongue(s).

Remember when Ze Frank did his Giant Baby schtick? Some of those symbols or icons aren't as obvious as you might think.

Why does a Cardinal's hat mean "bump in the road"? What the heck does a "men working" sign have to do with road crews?

And what about the Giant Baby? What is he trying to tell us? What does he want? What's his story?

I do get your point however here is a tool called a spanner wrench. It is usually used on machine tools like lathes or milling machines. Wonder what they call that? This is a good example of speaking 'Merican. We dont say loo, lorry and we know how to pronounce garage.

Been driving in the uk for 10 years. Biggest diff between the us and uk is that the uk doesn't baby you. In the USA, ere are 5 per-signs warning you of your exit or of a curve or something. In the uk, there is normally just one.

What is true is that the Brits are practically confused by speed limits. Since speed limits depend on the type of road, there are few signs explicitly telling you what the limit is. Consequentially, you often get somebody who is unsure or who has forgotten the exact limits going much too slow (typically going 40 Ina 60).

However, British drivers are in general infinitely better than Americans, since the driving test is correspondingly tougher and formal training is needed. That. And the Brits not being big swinging dicks as much as a certaing segment of the us is.

Red circle signs are prohibitions -- so this one means "no motorised vehicles". What's so hard about that?

Hmmm...I understand the red circle bit, but to me, that sign would mean, "No Motorcycles, jumping over Cars"

if they want to prohibit motorised vehicles, wouldn't they have a photo of an engine inside the red circle instead of a motorcycle jumping over a car?

But you also have crescent and channel locks.

Then again the British aren't necessarily known for their engineering ability... look at the Jaguar.

Personally, I find the UK worse than Italy and both are much better than the US where you have to read signs as opposed to registering a pictogram.

And yes, Euro drivers are much better on average than North American drivers.

agreed, the actually use the slow lane and pass on the left for one. and for those Germans, it's not just about how well you drive, but they also have to look good doing it.

it's hard for me to judge the adequacy of my native road signs in California. I just know that in Italy, I've seen two signs pointing in different directions towards the same town. Pick one, I guess ...
