"Finally, a USB cable that costs more than whatever you're connecting it to"

Subby, it's a proprietary cable for a $6,200 phone, so... no.

Monster cables have been around for years.

Both are ridiculous. And there's no reach-around, either!

Sure, but it's not a cable that costs more than the thing it's being plugged into.

Um, as a professional geek, I love hardware. I looked at the specs for those phones and I found nothing unique about them except for the concierge service. They also seem to deliberately leave out which processor is in the Vertu Constellation.

You know fools and their money.

I think it is cool that there is a market for embellished, jewled up phones. The issue that I take with them is that they are usually 2-3 generations behind what is currently being offered from retailers/service providers. Honestly, there is no excuse for that.

Ha. You're not truly hearing anything until you use hand-crafted tube interconnects from Bratislava.

Each phone is handmade by a single craftsman. The buttons are made of rubies and sapphires. The glass front of the phone takes a week in a 2000-degree furnace to make. It's...interesting if stupid.

The phones are most popular in Russia and the Middle East which doesn't surprise me at all.

Their flip phone is only $8,600.00. An alligator skin case for that phone is a mere $795.00. At $190, they're practically giving that cable away. Paupers.

Sadly, if you're the kind of person who will spend $300,000 on a cellphone, you probably weren't going to give that $300,000 to help starving children anyway.

Subby does fail.

So does the cable...and the phone it goes to

and the buyer of said phone, and said cable

No if you'll excuse me, the very intelligent and kind Best Buy sales rep standing right next to me has prepared my gold plated $300 HDMI cable for me to take home.

Hell, chances are the $300,000 came from backdoor deals, causing stuff like that photo.

/apparently they can afford cameras instead of giving them food too.

It could just be me, but what exactly is the point of that sort of dick waving? Especially in places like Russia and the Mideast, where you have quite a few people that could use that cash and religion dictates almsgiving.

Even some of the more basic phones these days are triumphs in aesthetics and build quality compared to a few short years ago. Paint doesn't wear off, screws are used instead of cheap sealed-together plastic... My Arrive is a thing of beauty, as are iPhones, Lumias, and the various Android models. I think jewels would screw that up.

I dunno, Subby. When we moved into our current office, we found a 25' Monster USB cable. I'm pretty sure that cost more than anything it was ever plugged into.

But if I sign a contract, they will knock the price down to $50, right?

Of course, it's company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a Monster cable. We have to use the indefinite article, "a Monster cable", never ... your Monster cable.

Purely out of curiosity, how DOES one get sound from an XBOX when you're hooking it up to a monitor and not a TV?

/Got XBOX as intern gift.
//Opened it maybe twice because of this problem.
///And Steam is awesome.
////And I truly suck at non-kb/mouse control schemes.
//And I already own most of my XBOX games for PC anyways.

If you find yourself a multi-billionaire in Russia or Saudi Arabia, do you think you give a fark whether there are people in those countries that are struggling? Do you think religious mandates apply to you anymore?

No, you spend several hundred million dollars on luxury residences in several of the world's most extravagant locations, relocating from one to another as often as necessary to avoid paying your share of taxes, and the closest you ever come to poverty again is when your assistant sends his assistant's assistant into the slums to find you a fresh round of indentured concubines.

meyerkev: Purely out of curiosity, how DOES one get sound from an XBOX when you're hooking it up to a monitor and not a TV?

There's an RCA Audio Adapter that plugs into the A/V port next to the HDMI port on the back of the console; that'll give you a pair of RCA stereo jacks for analog audio (necessitating a cable like the one in xkcd if you want to connect crummy PC speakers to it), or an S/PDIF jack for making a digital connection to just about any audio receiver made in the last 10 years.

I had the same problem. I was so used to steam and kb/mouse gaming that I.refused to learn xbox. But after about a week or so I was pretty good at call of duty. Use it and it will come easy.

I just looked at the Vertu site. For the Constellation's specs ("the first handset with a full touch screen from Vertu"), the only thing tech-related listed is the 8 megapixel camera. The rest... "Polished stainless steel, sapphire screen, black leather"

I dig the $85 wall wart that just provides a USB port on it.

us.vertu.com

I bet my phone will sound better if I use this power converter. It will provide a cleaner 5 volts to the flux capacitor.

I have a monster cable. I had to return it to the store because the connector was bent. The idiot started to argue with me that I must have farked it up. His co-worker looked at him and said "Dude, it's a monster cable get him a new one".

Hooray!

Yeah, that store is out of business now though.

Unlike the auto industry, where luxury cars usually have features well in advance of standard models, in the computer industry, it's cheaper and easier to introduce advances in technology across entire product lines, and sell lots of them at a lower price.

What I want to know is: who's buying these phones? Whenever you see photos of celebrities and/or the wealthy/powerful with their phones, they're inevitability using Blackberries or iPhones.

Point? Make people so bloody rich and entitled, from birth, that they have no concept of either good value or what other people's poverty means. Remove all requirement for public service of any kind (such as constitutional royalty typically have). You end up with spoiled sociopaths, Paris Hilton being a good Western example.

From the looks of it, it is probably running a version of Symbian Anna powered by a 680 MHz ARM11. So it's likely running what amounts to 1st gen iPhone hardware with an OS that has an actively hostile user interface. It's better than a dumbphone, but it is not quite advanced enough to be considered a smartphone. A developmentally disabled phone?

Don't be dumb.
A generations old watch, if it has been properly maintained, still serves its primary function.

While on the subject of USB and wall chargers... I have a question for the Fark hivemind. Can I safely charge my Droid Incredible 2 from an Apple iPad USB charger? The stats are:

Droid Incredible Charger : 5V 1A
Apple Charger : 5.1V 2.1A

I thought the point of using USB was for standardization sake... Anyway, I figured Fark would have the EE background to know. Thanks!

Imagine giving your child a cell phone from the '80s.

That is how ridiculous you sound even suggesting that a phone can be an heirloom.
