I get major picture break up on some vids -- lots of green - - anyone know possibly why?

Bad codec?

amazing. truly amazing.

i still like the blue angels' "fat albert" and its JATO.

seen it in person several times. better than the F18s.

Badass and really cool to hear the communication between the pilot and co-pilot.

I always wanted to see that, but they don't do the JATO from a simulated takeoff at off-airport airshows like Seafair in Seattle (Which is where I've seen them all but maybe 5 times.). Now, I've heard that they went and ran out of JATO bottles.

For something equally cool, but a lot longer, here's video of a demo by a Navy F/A-18 from a GoPro mounted on the pilot's helmet: Link (new window)

As a C-130J crewmember, I'm getting a kick....

I tried to watch fullscreen but got airsick after 4 minutes...

Huge but graceful, like the hippos dancing in Disney's Fantasia.

Absolutely. Saw this at the Eau Claire airshow back in high school (~95/96ish). I was thinking to myself that this big plane was going to be kinda boring (didn't know about the JATO) but when the thing took off it was about as impressive as it gets to see a massive transport plane going practically straight up.

Could probably find a better place to do that than over some suburbs. I was waiting for the voice-over saying "Then, suddenly, something goes terribly wrong".

The guy is very talented, but no amount of talent can stop a control surface from locking up when you're in mid maneuver. It's fine to risk your own lives, but do it over a desert or something.

WHAT?

No "Highway to the Danger Zone, I'll take you right into the Danger Zone"? That's not a proper airshow video without that.

.
..
Kidding. Great find subby.

Me too.

I also got the impression the copilot was getting a little airsick as well.

Did you hear the woman in the backseat that kept warning them or telling them the obvious? Typical, right?

That was simultaneously boring and amazing.

So many things running through my mind when I watched that...

I mean, really? Was he trying to break that thing? Or maybe just make it fall from the air? His computer was none too happy with his speed or altitude, that's for sure.

Loves me a C130. I had heard that they once did a carrier landing and took off again without even backing up. A quick search of Ze Googles: Verified! (new window)

"The last landing I participated in, we touched down about 150 feet from the end, stopped in 270 feet more and launched from that position, using what was left of the deck. We still had a couple hundred feet left when we lifted off. Admiral Brown was flabbergasted."

And here's a little documentary video (new window) on the trials.

You gotta love the C-130. I remember watching the USCG pilots on Kodiak fly them up the face of Mt. Barometer, practically stall at the peak while the loadmaster pushes a pallet out and then use the ground effect as they fly that thing down the other face at no more than 20 feet from death. Truly amazing stuff to watch.

Take the Space A flight from Kodiak to Elmendorf in the winter while riding in a jumpseat sucks. But at least we were off Kodiak for a couple days. Good times, growing up a USCG brat in the late 80's to early 90's.

I can just hear that computer saying in that woman's voice: "Um, hey. Um, hey. Um, hey. What the heck are you doing here? Um, hey."

I've been up in hundreds of 130's.

/Never been in one when it landed.

How much did that cost?

I wonder if there's an HD copy I can watch without paying $5/month to a website I'll never visit again.

/seriously, who would pay $5/month for a website?

Sorry to say, that was not an air show demonstration. It was a check flight for every single warning bell/whistle/voice on the damn thing. It apparently has many, and seems to have passed.

Grables'Daughter: I can just hear that computer saying in that woman's voice: "Um, hey. Um, hey. Um, hey. What the heck are you doing here? Um, hey."

I was going to say that it would have been a lot more pleasant without that woman nagging the pilot all the time....

About the only voice warnings they didn't get where the TCAS ones, and I'm not sure if if the C-130 has TCAS.

That was some fine flying, but the loadmaster likely lost his lunch since the ride in back isn't fun.

Imma just waitin' for you to fall in lerve, have a few kids, git married, git fat, fall outta lerve, d-i-v-o-r-c-e, start hatin' men, expermint widda ladies, git fatter, begin ta hatin men real bad, then need sum cawk.
Then, and only then, when you are old, fat, all banged out, and really stabby, will you be in my dating pool.
Until then, I will be happily sipping a cab sav, reading guy de maupassant which is on my nightstand over the drawer full of mice my cats leave alone in my run down trailer, and eat sliced apple from the Isle De La Motte, with crackers, and aged cheddar while wondering what happened to that succulent flat tummy, as you cruise the lookin fers on alt dot com in your 40s.

At 2:06 in, climbing at 55 degrees with the ramp open, OMFG!
Having been strapped in on those nylon jump seats before, Had I been on that flight, I would have shat myself blind and then puked myself into a coma.
Thanks I'll walk from here.

Thanks. Didn't know if the military had it or not. I'll worry less about getting buzzed by AF trash haulers now. The C-130s out of Moffett Field tend to try and avoid the bugsmashers out of Palo Alto, but the patterns cross.

MC-130P at Moffett. Converted H Models. They *probably* have TCAS.

As one of those bugsmashers at KPAO I can attest to them having "TCAS"....a junior airman hanging off the back ramp looking for traffic.
