Or perhaps it was the parent that caused the problem. Can't really see the youngster saying: "Oh, mum, do we have to go to the library to take the books back. I would rather not." And mum saying: "Yeah, what's the worst that can happy over some smelly library books."

Regardless of whether the action was too heavy-handed, Massachusetts state law does state that the non-return of library books is a crime.

I have an overdue book from my Massachusetts childhood, so I'm getting a kick out of this thread. BRB, someone's knocking

So, a six figure salary (thanks to overtime) is going burn gas and depreciate a $70k cop car to go collect a $0.25 fine for remind a kid to return a $25 book.

I hope the good people of that town are comfortable with their property taxes being what they are.

Yeah they kinda left out the whole part where the library was calling them and e-mailing them for almost a year and asking them to return the books before they sent the cop to bug them about it.

Yeah, '71. That was my first year on the job. Bad year for libraries.
Bad year for America. Hippies burning library cards, Abby Hoffman
telling everybody to steal books. I don't judge a man by the length of
his hair or the kind of music he listens to. Rock was never my bag. But
you put on a pair of shoes when you walk into the New York Public
Library, fella.

Well, let me tell you something, funny boy. Y'know that little stamp,
the one that says "New York Public Library"? Well that may not mean
anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole hell of a lot.
Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before:
Flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're
thinking. What's this guy making such a big stink about old library
books? Well, let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without
libraries, people like you and me. Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change
the world, but what about that kid, sitting down, opening a book, right
now, in a branch at the local library and finding drawings of pee-pees
and wee-wees on the Cat in the Hat and the Five Chinese Brothers?
Doesn't HE deserve better? Look. If you think this is about overdue
fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that
kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped! Or: maybe
that turns you on, Seinfeld; maybe that's how y'get your kicks. You and
your good-time buddies. Well I got a flash for ya, joy-boy: Party time
is over. Y'got seven days, Seinfeld. That is one week!

Still ridiculous to send a cop, but yeah, the part where mom claims to have received no warnings of any kind stinks. Just revoke their borrowing privileges until they return the books and pay up.

It's pretty likely the kid's account has a parent/guardian listed, so this again falls upon the (ir)responsible adult.

The mom just wants her 15 minutes of fame. Any normal person would have looked at their child and said "Next time be more responsible or you won't get the check out any books from the library" and let the kid cry for a few minutes. We have laws on file about this too since people were "checking out" new books from the library and then selling them online. Having fines wasn't an arrestable offense until we changed the laws and since book thefts have plummeted saving the taxpayers money. The police didn't arrest the girl, so why this is even a story is beyond me.

I'm usually one of the first to find fault with the police, however, this guy clearly stated he really didn't want anything to do with it but was delegated the task by the Chief. I wouldn't go calling him a "Face of Evil" front runner on that basis.

It's not like he was asked to round up brown people without PC - there is a law on the books in MA that makes this act unlawful and he was told to enforce it by his Chief.

Nobody should ever tell a little girl she did something wrong, and especially not a cop. This, right here, is precisely what could happen.

I don't see an issue here. Having overdue books is a crime so who else are you going to send aside from the police to collect the books and fines. A child can not have a library card without a legal guardian also signing and being ultimately responsible for the books that are checked out so the police didn't go after the 5 year old they went after the mother for being irresponsible.

CheekyMonkey: Did you really just say that a five-year-old should be more responsible? HINT: It's the mom that should be more responsible...

You know, at five I was responsible for returning my library books. The one time I forgot and the library called my mom I got grounded for a week. Since when did five become such a tender age kids shouldn't be expected to be responsible one iota?

Also at five I had to feed the cats, take out the kitchen garbage, clean the catboxes, clean my room, clean my part of the bathroom, clean the toy room, and pick up dog poop in the yard before my dad mowed the lawn. I guess my parents were just horrible ogre parents.

/"Returning my library books" either was me riding my bike the four blocks away to drop them off or have my mother drop them off on her way to work. I was still responsible for knowing when they needed to be back.
