♫ When you attend a funeral,
It is sad to think that sooner or
Later those you love will do the same for you.
And you may have thought it tragic,
Not to mention other adjec-
Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do....♫

A Short Dirge For St Trinian's (C. Day Lewis [1953])

Where are the girls of yesteryear? How strange
To think they're scattered East, South, West, and North -
Those pale Medusas of the Upper Fourth,
Those Marihuanas of the Moated Grange.

No more the shrieks of victims, and no more
The fiendish chuckle borne along the breeze!
Gone are the basilisk eyes, the bony knees.
Mice, and not blood, run down each corridor.

Now poison ivy twines the dorm where casks
Were broached and music mistresses were flayed,
While on the sports ground where the pupils played
The relatively harmless adder basks.

Toll for St Trinian's, nurse of frightful girls!
St Trinian's, mother of the far too free!
No age to come (thank God) will ever see
Such an academy as Dr Searle's.

Two headlines in a row on the Entertainment tab that seem to be complete gibberish to me...

I'm either too old or too young, and I'm not sure which.

Weidbrewer: Two headlines in a row on the Entertainment tab that seem to be complete gibberish to me...

Searle did some children's book illustrations and cartoons for the New Yorker, which are the reasons you might know him if you grew up in the States. Apparently, he was huge in the UK for his series of cartoons about badly-behaved girls at a private school.

He is wet and weedy and I tuff him up.

Quite daring in that fotherington-tomas was obviously homosexual.

Actually, to be fair, the Molesworth books were written by Geoffrey Willans, and illustrated by Searle.

Even though I'm American, I went to a UK boys-only prep school for three years and pretty much lived the whole St Custards experience.

The first round of Saint Trinian's (comics and movies therefrom) was in the 1950s; it's had at least two (not overly successful) movie revivals since. Hollywood's so low on ideas, though, they'll probably try again soon.

The difficulty is that the original shenanigans would barely raise a Fark headline these days.

I assume it's kind of like the "Carry On" films in that (as far as I know) they've had less than zero impact here in the States.

/only know about "Carry On" because I watch an absurd amount of BBC programming.

"Hand up the girl who burnt down the East Wing last night."

You shall be missed.

(Oh, and there's an important point of differentiation to be made between the Carry On series and Searle's work, viz. that the latter is actually funny.)

Searle you can't be serious.
