Is it irony because the cars contain iron?

Seriously? In other news, oranges are ironic because they're the color orange!

magneto, most ironic superhero ever. (except when he was in prison)

At least he's consistent. Perhaps he was getting married that day and he didn't want to walk because it was raining. Now THAT would be ironic.

At first I thought he was just a professional car thief, who like all professionals, can have a few bad days, but then get back up to speed. However, with drunk driving convictions, I do hope the firemen left a little stash of brandy or cognac on board for those cold evenings.

2012-01-03 10:45:09 AM
Who would have thought? It figures.

2012-01-03 10:45:18 AM
Had the car thief been released from prison, and unknowingly bought a stolen vehicle... and then arrested and put back into jail for possession of a stolen vehicle... perhaps then it would be ironic.

FTFA: Thomas Francis Kelley, who had two years remaining on a parole violation sentence on convictions for car theft and drunk driving, disappeared New Year's Day after being assigned to firefighting duty.

He only had two years left and decided to escape? Jesus, what a moran.

You would expect that once a person has stolen a vehicle and been incarcerated someone would tell the prison chef that his special dietary concerns mean he needs much less vehicles in his meals and therefore would make the changes in his diet and lifestyle to lower his blood vehicle level to within accepted normal ranges for his age and weight. This is what you would expect, the exact opposite happened, ergo irony.

From Wikipedia:
The American Heritage Dictionary's secondary meaning for irony: "incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs."[4] This sense, however, is not synonymous with "incongruous" but merely a definition of dramatic or situational irony. It is often included in definitions of irony not only that incongruity is present but also that the incongruity must reveal some aspect of human vanity or folly. Thus the majority of American Heritage Dictionary's usage panel found it unacceptable to use the word ironic to describe mere unfortunate coincidences or surprising disappointments that "suggest no particular lessons about human vanity or folly."[5]"

I'd say that this episode was the very picture of both action taken in vain, and folly.

"Situational irony is the disparity of intention and result: when the result of an action is contrary to the desired or expected effect. Being "shot with one's own gun", or "hoisted with one's own petard" are popular formulations of the basic idea of situational irony."

Or being given an escape vehicle by your jailors.

A friend once locked his keys in his car parked at a prison. My dad borrowed an inmate to unlock the car. Saved money on not calling a locksmith and an inmate did a service. True story happened at Broad River Corrections Institute in SC.
