yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

PANIC
common black tip sharks are farking australian black tip sharks.

sigh

I would love to know HOW they determine a different but closely related species.
How close are these two?
As close as humans and chimps? poodles and greyhounds?

how much variation is required to be a different species?

stupid science.

Pretty soon sharks will be sending homo-sapiens 'messages', learning to swim backwards, navigating buildings, even swimming down hallways.

But I *just* got here and was planning to hit the beaches on Saturday.

Do me a favor...

If I die this Saturday in Mooloolaba, greenlight my obituary and say "we told him so."

Thanks.

Well, considering how long sharks have existed in the geological record, a LOT longer than H. sapiens, I'm not really surprised they would respond to the pressures on their population somehow. Malleable genetics is a good thing.

That's because the concept of species is an arbitrary idea made up by man to try to make it easier to catalog nature. Nature is under no obligation to follow our arbitrary demarcations between species.

Not only cross species, but probably don't care for the other's religion as well.

So are the young fertile? Because if they are, doesn't they mean that they are the same species by our current definition?

In reality these aren't "species" they are more akin to breeds. This would be like being shocked that a great dane bred with a doberman.

I guess though this means we'll eventually be able to throw hadokens at our shark enemies.

Biological reality is messy, human categorizations are an approximation to that reality.

BTW that list of species concepts is reduced if you are only talking about animals where things are a little more clear cut. The Biological species concept works in the vast majority of cases but isn't strictly black and white, and there are exceptions.

SharkTrager: In reality these aren't "species" they are more akin to breeds. This would be like being shocked that a great dane bred with a doberman

I'm not an expert on Shark phylogeny but looking at a few recent papers they seem to be a hell of a lot more genetically divergent than dog breeds, but they are very closely related. It's like the situation with Grizzlies and Polar bears. They split from each other relatively recently and one has a much more restricted habitat and range. So they have been reproductively isolated which qualifies them as a species. Changing ocean habitats is pushing their ranges closer so they are overlapping more. Because they split so recently they are still capable of interbreeding.

It happens.

the animals are adapting to climate change

interbreeding between the two shark species is a sign

hybridisation

make the sharks stronger

sharks

stronger

Sharks physically mate

stronger

make sure you don't hybridize with the wrong species," she said

their offspring is extraordinary

we still have a lot to learn about these important ocean predators

I had an idea for a script once. It's basically Jaws except when the guys in the boat are going after Jaws they look around and there's an even bigger Jaws, so the guys have to team up with Jaws to get bigger Jaws. I called it big Jaws!
