regardless of its history that Tommy gun would fetch thousands anyhow

Word has it that Clyde made some ingenious modifications to the guns.

2012-01-02 09:32:46 PM
There's an "in the box" Thompson for sell on gunbroker.com for $80k. I would imagine one as famous as Clyde's could easily go for $100k.

Although the pump action looks slightly different, experts believe that these grainy, aged images are proof that the guns once lay in the deadly hands of the rogue crime duo.

Yeah, no way that's the same shotgun. Can't even claim it's a different piece of woodwork, the screw is in the wrong place.

If by "slightly" you mean "completely", then yes.

Oh, and way to copy the headline verbatim from TFA, subparmitter.

As somebody who grew up in Southlake TX, just a few miles from where Bonnie and Clyde gunned down 2 state troopers, I'm getting a kick from this thread. Even covered the memorial that got put up in honor of the two cops as a photographer. Met either the wife of one of the troopers killed. This was back in 96 or 97, and she wasn't a spring chicken anymore.

That picture of her holding the shotgun... that's not a Winchester. That's a Browning A5.

I have two of them.

It's a completely different weapon. The photo looks like a Browning auto lite 12 with a shortened barrel.

That photo can't be provenance for this weapon, but it doesn't mean the story isn't true. All the photo proves is the Barrow's used a A-5 lite 12 in their travels.

What is the significance of the term 'transferable' in this context? My guess is there are strong regulations about their sale as they are fully automatic (?) guns but some can be sold?

I'm sure the Texas Ranger Museum and Hall of Fame would be interested in getting their hands on those.

They owned, stole and lost many guns during their active time that it the grainy aged images mean nothing.

I'm not going to argue make & model but you're correct, she's holding a shotgun with a fixed fore grip in the photo, whereas the one for sale is a pump action. Apples/oranges.

See "The Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986".

Reagan was a gun banner, almost as successful of one as George Bush. Funny that the Dems are the ones who are not banning guns...

rebelyell2006: the grainy aged images mean nothing.

It just means that reporters, as usual, can't tell the difference between guns. I don't think anyone should doubt the ownership if it has been verified. However, The Daily Fail once again proves they suck the big one.

if it was privately owned before 1986 it is transferable from person to person, subject to National Fire Arms Act.

That is not the same shotgun, it is clearly some Glock-made AK variant. Stupid reporters.

firearms made in 1899 and earlier are classified as antiques and require no licensing to own or transfer. I'm assuming then that early model Thompsons may be old enough to qualify.

My God. That looks cleaner than the brand-new 1927-A1 I bought 5-10 years ago. Beautiful fit & finish.

All full auto registrations were prohibited in 1986. There are only potentially about 180k Pre 1986 registered full autos in existence. Every one of them is worth thousands, but Thompsons are among the most desirable, going for at least $15k each.

Lites weren't made until after WW2. The pic is grainy and it 'could' be a Model 11, but I doubt it. I believe it's a first generation A5.

The gun she appears to be holding(which, in this picture, is in fact an A5):

I wonder why that pic is reversed? Tintypes are because that's how they work, but that looks like modern photography - just sloppy printing maybe?

Cool to see the 3 1911's in the pic. That handgun is still being made today, pretty much the same as it was in 1911.

The shotgun in her hand is quite obviously a Browning Auto-5, complete with bolt handle. The Shotgun in the Auction is a Winchester '97.

Somebody is going to be quite disappointed at this auction, if one gun is obviously not the same, it's safe to assume the other isn't either. Providence matters to collectors, and I don't see ANY of that for either of these guns.

This is the deadly cache of guns once owned by notorious gangsters Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, which is set to go under the hammer at auction this month.

The .45 calibre Thompson sub-machine gun - also known as a Tommy gun - and a 12-gauge Winchester shotgun dating back to 1897 could fetch thousands.

Ha! Only in England would 2 guns be called a "cache"

Never knew the weapons were in my hometown.
Got to shoot a full auto Thompson at a local gun shop with an indoor range years ago. They actually had an old german MP 40 that I hinted to them about shooting. The thing was so crude & dangerous that it scared them to let anyone handle it, so they offered up the Tommy instead. Fun, but expensive to feed so I kept the range time brief.

2012-01-02 11:07:09 PM
So a cop, gives his buddy a stolen machinegun from a crime scene, and they guy gets to keep it and now his family sell it for $100k+?!?!

2012-01-02 11:07:33 PM
Sometimes old weapons are only that, old weapons. I seriously doubt that any collector of note would buy these with out any sort of iron clad provenance.
For some nouveau riche idiot living in a McMansion though, "all-bets-are-off".

2012-01-02 11:20:39 PM
My buddy just got his first automatic, a nice Thompson submachine gun. Last time I looked you could get in the game for $3-4k with a MAC-11 chambered in .380, but I haven't checked prices in a few years. This year I've got a few cans and other accessories to purchase for stuff I already own.
