They did have a great run, but I assume one thing a GM is responsible for is to have a little bit more depth at QB than a couple guys who would be hard-pressed to make a good college team, let alone the pros.

Still, wonder how many other GM's could have passed the test? I am not even sure I know who plays backup behind Brady, Rodgers, etc.

Bill Polian did some fine work, but I remember reading somewhere -- maybe on Deadspin, maybe linked on Fark -- that Chris Polian is an entitled farkup who didn't work to get where he got in the Colts organization and that he was promoted solely at the whim of his father.

So... bye.

I think this was just the owner realizing Peyton Manning wasn't IR'd and is due a metric ass-ton of cash for being a bench warmer.

Um...were you not watching yesterday's game, or were you just unaware that even before it Matt Flynn was considered one of the better backups in the league?

How long until we hear that Colts have entire coaching staff? The Manning era is likely over in Indy, welcome to a rebuilding team Colts fans.

Think Wayne will sign with the Pat's?

The Polians have as many busts in the draft as Jerry Jones, otherwise the team would not have collapsed the moment you take the centerpiece of their collection out.

Seriously, Rex Ryan wasn't so off the mark when he said he could have won the SB at SD if he was at the helm -- Norv took a 14-2 team and look where they are now. The only game of significance they have had in the last couple of years is last night's win over the raiders that allowed the Denver Ponies sneak into the playoffs.

I didn't even watch yesterday's game but by the end of the day I knew who Flynn was, where he played and what he just did because it was all over the sports news.

So who's a decent general manager available?

I'd imagine the next GM gets to decide what to do with the Colts' situation, after Peyton works out for six weeks or so, and the hoopla leaves town.

But only if he's not hired elsewhere as a head coach

"As Ryan said last week, Schottenheimer will be back with the team next season in his current role, if he is not hired else where as a head coach. Tannenbaum confirmed that Jacksonville asked for and was granted permission to interview Schottenheimer for its head-coaching vacancy."

Rivers makes good points, but Norv lost me when he didn't know Matthews was pulled in overtime. He didn't even notice his starting running back wasn't in the game until a reporter asked him about it.

That's terrible leadership.

I personally think it was Polian that wanted to move on from Peyton and the owner who wanted to keep Manning. During a game he said, "We just paid him 26 million dollars to not play, why would anybody think we won't pay him 26 million dollars next year to play?"

And why would you ditch that kind of quarterback just to force a rookie quarterback to learn on the job? How many just-drafted rookie quarterbacks succeed in this league?

rickythepenguin: No way Peyton comes back without them.....He'll be under center for NYJ. You watch.

He'd be too expensive for the Jets. If he gets cut, he will want a contract most teams cannot afford. He can't be traded until after his roster bonus gets paid. It's pretty much a guarantee that the Colts will keep Manning if that happens. Even if they did trade him, his contract would be way too expensive for any team that's on the Jets level unless they gut their roster. The colts salary cap would have tons of dead money from the trade as well.

Chris Polian was interviewed for GM jobs with the dolphins, KC, 49ers, and Falcons. Nepotism might have reared its ugly head, but lots of people not related to the Colts organization were paying attention to him. His wife talked him out of taking the Dolphins job.

Actually word around town is that Polian and Manning do not get along, and Polian was locked in on Luck. I think this points more toward Manning staying in Indy and maybe going in a different direction than Luck with the draft.

I can't see them NOT drafting luck. Even if Luck doesn't pan out, they'll have a year to figure out if he can learn the Indy system, and if he doesn't, his trade value will still be through the roof.

They should trade the pick for more picks and build an actual damn team and get RGIII/Landry/Foles/etc.

Luck's value won't be as high if he doesn't pan out because he won't look nearly as good and if they're trying to trade the hyped up #1 pick before he's even started a game, other GMs will be understandably weary.

Manning has said a couple of times this y ear that he doesn't know what Polian is talking about. Most notably about the plan to draft a QB and the fact Manning would fail his physical today.

Although it certainly would be advantageous for him to fail so he would have complete access to team rehab staff and facilities..
