Um, Obama is neither "supremely unpopular" nor "beatable."

Apparently a conservative concern troll who's recently turned his attention to the 2012 elections.

Hey subby - just use 'mod_rewrite' to do the work, it will be a lot easier when it comes time to swift boat Elizabeth Warren in 2016.

Bush had better approval ratings than Oingo Boingo at this point in his presidency.

(Another difference, just FYI: Mr. Romney earned his millions; Mr. Kerry married a ketchup heiress.)

Last I checked Romney inherited his wealth and Kerry did not come from a poor family either. Yes Kerry became filthy rich by marrying a female version of Romney, but to say Romney "earned" his money and Kerry "married" into it is not true.

Because we were still in that portion of the 2000s where questioning Bushco was a sure-fire path to social ostracism or an asswhupping.

Romney earned money in the vein of that old saying, "You have to have money to make money."

Is it pronounced "see-you-are-ell"? Because it's a command to copy a URL? I haven't heard anyone say it out loud, but that's how I would say it.

2012-01-02 04:58:57 PM
The ridiculous part isn't where he compared Romney to Kerry, but that he compared Obama's popularity to Bush's. Obama is still way more popular that Bush ever was. Sure, it's basically a continuation of all the same policies with a few minor tweaks, but the popularity is not comparable.

Another example is sudo... I think it's supposed to be pronounced "soo-doo", because it means "do as a super user". But I'm not sure if I've ever heard of any other person saying "soo-doo" or "soo-doh".

DeltaPunch: But I'm not sure if I've ever heard of any other person saying "soo-doo" or "soo-doh".

For me, it's "soo-doh" as in "pseudo". As in, "I'm not really super-user, but do this as if I were."

I've heard both, and for exactly the reason you gave. I tend to say sudoh out loud.

Maybe you're in the wrong universe today or something. It can't be a Midwesternism, either.

It reminds me of my friend who always pronounces the word "mono" as "moh-no" no matter how many times he might hear the correct pronunciation.

Some people put a "t" in often, too.

But the "do" in "sudo" stands for do as in "do it now", which is why some people say soo-doo. I think it's more correct, in fact, though I'll admit "sudoh" certainly sounds a little better.

You made me wade through several pages of forums to see what the proper pronunciation was :)

For the record, soo-doo and soo-doh are both acceptable pronunciations for sudo.

However, the most correct pronunciation for "gif" is "jif.". Not that anyone still says "jif."

I've heard that too. I'm guessing the latter pronunciation isn't used much outside of a particular industry.

I could finish my column, or I could just print the language from Romney's latest ad. I mean, it's the holidays, and this is really only half an idea anyway.

elchip: However, the most correct pronunciation for "gif" is "jif.". Not that anyone still says "jif."

I used to say "jif" but switched to "gif" because the "g" is short for "graphics", which is a "g" sound (okay, technically, it's a "gr", so it should be "grif", but feh).

There might be trolls on the Politics tab, but at least we can all agree that Linux is superior to OS/X, Windows, and BSD, and that Ubuntu is the best Linux distro out there, hands down.

though I disagree with Obama being supremely unpopular, I think they meant "beatable" in that Romney will be chosen because he is seen as most likely to beat Obama, i.e. can swing non-Republicans. Republican purity test may show otherwise, but I do think it's why Romney will ultimately be the GOP nominee.

Romney would have to go back in time and become a decorated war veteran to become the next John Kerry.
