How many people, other than lawyers and judges, search trials anyways?

People still use the Google home page?

I've just been using that simple box in the corner of my browser for years now.

I always forget to use that box when I'm not using Chrome (which is rarely the case). So much easier to just ctrl+t and start typing.

Don't know about the UK, but the US site has had this for months now

I like google's new design. Especially the Funny and Smart buttons next to the search box.

Does it allow me to use my backspace button to go back rather than deleting my search terms?

The "Stupid" and "Retarded" buttons seem to be much more popular.

I mostly highlight then right-click "search Google for ...".
1) gives results in a new tab immediately following current tab.
2) that search and then be further refined.

Sometimes if I just want a next door google search tab I will just highlight some random text (often starting and ending in the middle of words). This probably makes my Goog search profile rather strange which is OK by me.

NO! I'm outraged. Time to switch.

Askjeeves switched to "ask"?

Oh. My. God.

Getting to the Advanced Search from the google.com page is a pain in the arse now. The little gear link thing isn't there any more; if you want to search for an exact phrase, you type it in the box, then when the results page comes up, you click from there to the Advanced page, and then copypaste your input out of the "all words" box and into the "exact" box. I already have Advanced Search on one of my SpeedDial slots, and I guess I can devote another one to Advanced GIS, but it's annoying.

Considering the amount of crap that ships on most keyboards (the right click key, really? Ins, caps lock) I'm surprised no manufacturer has introduced a straight up Back button.

Well a lot of legacy programs do require some ancient keys that most people never use...

Can't get to the last couple of menu items on my little netbook because it drops down off screen. Quite annoying. And now I have to do a minimum of two clicks to get to maps or finance or gmail instead of just one click at the top.

Clockwork Kumquat: ... to the Advanced page, and then copypaste your input out of the "all words" box and into the "exact" box.

Do you not know about using surrounding double quotes to get an exact search?

I used to have a GreaseMonkey script that put a button on the search page that would enclose the search patterns in double quotes.

Holy fark. I thought I knew all the shortcuts and tricks. That's a new one, and it's great!

Thanks.

moothemagiccow: It baffles me how popular Google's homepage is

I use it because the website doesn't set off alarm bells with anything, it's simple (or used to be, getting more bloated every year, like an aging texas beauty queen), loads fast, and is generally what I want to do when I open a browser at work.

I dislike the box because it just seems to save my history no matter what I change settings to, and that skeeves me out. Same for your helpful instant search google, that shiat sucks.

So I use the mozilla google page as my home page. Because I hate instant search just that much.

There's an actual site called www.google.com? I thought it was a browser add on.

This is why my multiple attempts at vertical orientation on my monitor at work keeps failing... we keep seeing more websites with more stuff on the side that just looks stupid vertically

Bah. I need a second monitor.

My New Year's resolution is to always press both the Smart and Funny buttons or neither. No single buttons for me in 2012. No siree!

If you use Firefox, try the google shortcuts extension. It lets you add a button next to the nav bar and customise it for the google pages you use a lot. It's still two clicks, but the customisation lets you weed out the other pages that are cluttering your screen.

I know the quotes, yeah. Just going to the page and hitting TAB to get into whichever box I need is how I like to do it, instead of fussing with all the punctuation, especially if I need to use a combination of criteria. It's not an issue on my computer, because my bookmarks take me straight to the Advanced pages anyway, but if I'm on a different machine, it's annoying that there's no easy link to get there.

I've still not gotten over the Youtube remake from circa-2005/2006

I still miss it. Was one of the best website UIs I've ever had the pleasure of using.

For a time, the Firefox start page was a haven for the crap Google kept adding to their main page, then they decided to metastasize the cancer there too. And I'm talking about that Google Instant crap. Especially the GIS pages.

So the only way I've found that seems to keep it away is to use an add-on to change my user-agent string. Seems as if they don't try to borg you as much (resistance is futile, you WILL be assimilated) if you are using a browser they are not sure of. Breaks the 'search by image' function on GIS, but I'll live.

The user agent trick seems to mute the new page too. Hope they don't muck it up more. They've wrecked the usenet search features of Groups forever. I just don't even try anymore. Hope they don't wreck more.

I really wish Google would stop farking with their UI. The extra page redirect just to sign into gmail (which keeps throwing up ads pleading me to sign into g+), google analytics constantly insisting upon bringing me to the new interface, which uses a set page width rather than 100% (which sucks for people with small viewscreens), and even the stupid Youtube video widget that doesn't seem to buffer anymore meaning rewinding to a spot is a hassle.

GAH! It was all working fine before!

I wish instead of forcing the re-design of gmail they would extend the search results past 20 e-mails. That sh)it's pretty old and shoulda been fixed a long time ago.

When I upgraded IE to 8, it asked if I wanted to merge the Google search bar with the address bar. Simple choice. So I can use the address bar, but not in quite the same way as others. Although, I do have the Goog' as my home page when I browser up. for some reason, I don't get that whole drop-down thing right now, but I do have the + and iGoogle both set up as side pages, and a background pic, so some combo of elements of that may be having some arcane effect on the experience.

I've got Google set to come up as a home page. Yeah yeah, I know. Home pages in 2012, how 90's.

But, the first thing I usually do when firing up a browser is a google search, and besides that, I like seeing the doodles when they appear.

moothemagiccow: It baffles me how popular Google's homepage is

I use it largely for the specific IT function of "is the network connection functioning properly". One of the easiest to type and minimal-load websites I can think of.

/my homepage has always been about:blank, though

That. Not to mention the new gmail ui sucks goat balls. They seriously tried to be cutting edge and hip but instead all they got was aggravating and annoying. Label your damn buttons, quit making things move at the slightest touch and damn it let me turn that chat pane off if I want to.

Trial is not a verb. It's a event (a noun), something that happens, not something you do.

Firefox extension GoogleEnhancer has a setting for "classic google" - no more crappy redesigned search interface. No more clunky results pages.
