It takes about 50 meteors to fill your yard, so that's about 2 yards per hour.

Interesting, definitely.
This evening my wife saw a shooting star. It was just Richie Valens, though.

Could
be cool. Could also be freezing!

Is there a list anywhere that says where this will be visible? I always seem to be in the wrong place to see meteor showers.

"Not saying it's aliens..."
Watched a bunch of him over my Christmas break (holiday marathons and all that)...what is up with his accent/speech pattern? He drops his "T"s to some nasally, weird 27th letter of the alphabet. "extraterrestrials" become "exer-der-estials", and "astronaut" becomes "asro-not"
Man is a trip.

To get up in the middle of the night I'm going to need a lot more than 100 meteors per hour.

It'll be clear here for once. Unfortunately I'm in California so the moon might still be too high up when the meteor shower starts.

This site
(new window) has more details, including visibility from various locations. It's not like a solar eclipse where you have to be in a precise spot. Local conditions (clouds, distance from city lights) will be the main factor.
Personally, I wouldn't bother for a 100/hour rate. That's OK for one of the summer showers, but in winter I'm not going to spend hours driving and then freezing my ass off unless it's for something like the 2001 Leonids.

I'll be going to lunch about that time, but I work in a rather well-lit industrial park, so I'll probably have a hard time finding Polaris, much less seeing some meteors.
Light pollution sucks.

For California, the best time is listed as being 9pm to 4am.
Actually, you can see meteors any time of the year. I used to stop to take a leak on the late evening drive back from vising a friend, and used to see one or two while draining the lizard.

I haven't gotten any astro-pix with my new Canon 70-200 lens (yes... it's the f/2.8L MkII) or my new Canon 400mm f/5.6L. I might set up the telescope tripod and take some shots.

Seconded. Those were worth getting up at 0400 in -5 degree weather to view.
