Stupid woman. How does driving in a lower gear put "more of a strain on the car"?

If the engine is doing 2000rpm in 4th at 30mph or 2000rpm in third at 20mph then what is the difference? It's still doing 2000rpm.

In fact, if she's in 4th then she is not in fifth, so she's already putting "puts more of a strain on the car" herself anyway.

Follow the money, that's all the lowering the speed limit is about. In England, they have a speed camera about every 30 feet

BMW's have this little gauge in the dash that tells you your current consumption. I get about 10mpg at 20mph and 20mpg at 27mph, I've been stopped a few times on slow roads going just a few over.

Lovesandwich: Driving short trips no matter how fast you go will be bad for the engine.

driving short trips in a hybrid gets you crappy gas mileage, YET you may have a lower carbon footprint.

If she sells this car in 3-4 years for something newer (at ~60-80k miles wear on the engine) she well and truly doesn't/shouldn't give a rats ass about the 'wear on the engine.'

Load is different depending on speed. Higher speeds put more load on the engine, regardless of RPM.

Biatch be lyin', yo. Every engine has a peak efficiency range, and until you get into the zone where you're in the engine's sweet spot while doing the highest speed possible you are going to get less fuel economy, but lower speeds load up the engine less and cause less wear.

Some cars (very few) are poorly geared for the street, with a 1st gear that will lug the engine at 20mph, necessitating the slipping of the clutch. Running +2 tires on an already-marginal drivetrain can make this worse. However, no production BMW has this issue. Only a select group of cars built for the race track exhibit any problems putting around at less than 30mph. coont says herself that she's in 4th. Drop it down to 1st or 2nd and there is no problem at all.

Problem is, this is the Daily Fail we're talking about here. Got a big "notsureifserious.jpg" going on.

"It's painful to see an American try to comprehend other countries."

It's not painful to understand that 20 mph speed limits everywhere plus speed cameras everywhere is at least a little bit about raising revenue.

Need to get Morbo out for a "ENGINES DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!"

It is true that you'll get less MPG at slower speeds. MPG is a curve, you get less at slower speeds, less at higher speeds. Every car has a peak MPG speed, usually in the 50-60MPH range.

However it places no more strain on your engine to go slower than faster. The strain on the engine, such as it is, is entirely related to RPMs, which of course you can control by choosing a gear. Also engines are perfectly happy running at higher RPMs. You can run them at 4k all the time and they'll purr along no problem.

This woman is either stupid, or just being a whiny biatch because she wants to drive faster.

That's true of all engines. Quick bursts of stop-and-go is where most of the wear occurs, unless you're at a race track.

As long as it's up to operational temp, it shouldn't be a huge problem.

Just like your statements are based on prejudice, and not fact? I hope someone calls her out on her shiat.

Hybrid owners don't own hybrids because they care about the environment, they generally have them for status symbols.

More load = more wear, regardless of RPM.

It's a 320d, driving no faster than 20mph will result in higher emissions, poor fuel mileage, increased engine and emissions fouling, and more frequent DPF cycling. That's pretty much the story in any modern on road diesel engine. So, yeah, she's dead on right. That said, she can mitigate the damage by simply hitting a decent speed for a few minutes a day...just take it on the highway and punch it.

You gotta realize that they're talking about the size relative to normal cars in Europe. My Pa's John Deere Gator is about the size of the average car over there, just to give you a reference point. They ain't never seen anything like our Tahoes or Jeep Libertys, much less a Suburban or a Excursion.
