used to think it was a combo of equipment age & buy cheap/get cheap / using cheap VHS tapes repeatedly to death. now i suspect security companies charge so much for low quality units that systems worth buying (like ikegami) become a painful expense.

Ye olde RCA video disc. Vinyl video. A much maligned format, the disc should have been cheap to mass produce and distribute. Tapes required a slower duplication process in comparison, but the versatility and longer play times won out. In the end we wound up with a pressed video disc after all, but in the digital formats.
