Military is advertising on every Google search for "Military is". Meanwhile, Google's auto-complete suggests "Military is for uneducated people... is stupid... is a cult... is socialist" directly above the ad

they are not ads. they are the most frequently search-for terms. Google auto-completes them because most retards don't know how to touch-type; they piss me the f*ck off, I keep typing til

Google's autocorrect is why I abandoned it for
DuckDuckGo
(new window). When running searches on obscure terms, repeatedly having to tell it to search on what I typed got aggravating.
I miss the autocomplete, but not enough to go back. I prefer not being tracked and productized.

To those not getting the same results: the thing that probably influences ad placement more than I initially realized is cookies and browsing habits.
Poe's law:
"Poe's law, named after its author Nathan Poe, is an Internet adage reflecting the fact that without a clear indication of the author's intent, it is difficult or impossible to tell the difference between sincere extremism and an exaggerated parody of extremism."

I know they're supposed to be popular terms, but I'm sure companies want to pay Google to put subtle ads there and Google may do so if you offer enough money.
I remember visiting the X Consortium in 1992. One of the people there (Scheiffler?) was showing off a new feature of an X program: predictive autocomplete. I had never seen it before. I thought it was a really cool idea. Once I met it in real life I hated it. It distracts me from typing. When systems insist on offering completions I sometimes have to close my eyes to be able to type.

Sanriosucks: You're referring to the first google search result for "atheists are".
I pointed out the typo, but this article was actually written by some atheists in jest. It's from
landover baptist
(new tab), and is the epitome of 'Poe' (see above about Poe's law.)
Their stuff is not that awesome, in my opinion. But some people like it.

I haven't seen much military advertising lately -- figured it was because there's now a one-year wait to get in. This type of thing happens in this type of economy.

Yes, but the previous searches are already spurious because of the Santorum effect. The results show by Cuchulane are the clear result of people spamming Google searches to negatively effect the outcome of the Auto-Correct results.

I went looking for a pic I took a few years ago at my local shopping center. Near the ShopRite I frequent there was a closed-out ARMY uh,... whatever you call them, registry places. It was abandoned, all the furniture was removed and they had a 'THIS SPACE FOR RENT' placard in the window, but the neon lettering 'US ARMY' was still installed above the storefront.

The word is "recruiter".
You think that's bad? That's just normal turnover, as the recruiter moved to a sweeter spot.
There's a lawyer that set up shop in a mall around here, his sign reads "DIVORCE-MILITARY RATES"
/he used to be in the mall closest to the Navy base, until they tore it down and replaced it with a new one that wasn't willing to have him as a tenant, nor the pawn shop and the dive bar he was flanked by...oh no, modern cultured tenants only please!

I just got to my first duty station and the majority of the first term airmen I've met are in it for the education benefits. Out of tech school an airman is only a few classes away from an Associate's degree. The Montgomery GI Bill is worth over $50,000/year and rising. I plan to transfer my benefits to my wife and kids because I already have a Bachelor's degree.

Not trolling, really. Poe is usually more like when someone does an "I see what you did there" type joke, but because the extremists being parodied are so crazy/stupid, sometimes is mistaken for the real deal.
And to be clear, the only bit of Poe pictured is that landover baptist link ("How Report Atheists to FBI"). But it really was/is legitimately popping up due to auto-complete.
It's Poe because my post has a static image that will not let people click through to the article.
