Colorado became the fourth state to ask the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to reclassify marijuana as a narcotic in the same league as heavyweight painkillers including oxycodone.
Ugh, oxy? Really?
Well, it's a step in the right direction, I suppose.

I can't get quotes to work but from the article:
The DEA said it would "reply accordingly," but noted that similar petitions had been rejected before. DEA spokeswoman Barbara Carreno told CNN that the agency gives "great respect" to state governments, but their requests would get
the same attention as a petition from a medical group or anything else."

Actually, it initially was made illegal as another way to control the black population (they're going to smoke the devil weed and rape your white women!). Now an exceedingly lucrative prison-industrial complex has too much capital invested into imprisoning people to ever walk back from that.

It is true that drug busts are the life blood to federal money for local police, don't discount the "tough on crime" platform that gets politicians elected in that equation because that's why this continues. If I recall though, you are correct it was yellow journalism and Hearst who really started this nonsense. What is really interesting is that the war on drugs started just as the civil rights movement won it's victories, it's almost as if it was done to give cops a legal reason to harass black people.

Before the racist DEA forefathers had their way with it back in the 30s, it was common knowledge cannabis was effective with multiple different medical applications. They used to market tinctures of it that could be purchased at any pharmacy.
"Marijuana." Ugly word. They started using a Mexican term for the term to inspire negative feelings towards it back in the 30s too. It should still be called cannabis.

Cannabis isn't a narcotic.
Just stop pissing and moaning about a campaign waged by a newspaper publisher nearly a hundred years ago. Yes, cannabis can be used for industrial purpose that would threaten the timber industry. Yes, it might threaten corn for feed. Yes, hemp cloth could threaten artificial fibers. Yes, it could threaten pharmaceuticals if legalized. It also opens up opportunities for those who could seize upon them, and switch their production lines.
Get over it. It's a plant. It's been used for centuries, and it is a resource that is not only ripe with opportunity, it's one that this very nation was built upon. Hells, the drafts of the Constitution were written on hemp--though, to be fair, the final were written on parchment.
The fact is, the Navy has an exception to use hemp rope, because of its superior qualities. The fact is, that folks simply want to patent a natural product, and they'll pay handsomely to keep competition from the field. It isn't about law and order. It isn't about public safety. It's about pure profit motive, and folks who really don't like competition.

Personally, I would rather have a bunch of "stoners" than drunks around.
Stoners usually don't cause trouble or fight. Some people can't handle weed (mental illness) and cause problems, but if I had to choose who to be around 24/7, I would choose stoners over drunks in a heartbeat.

The people who don't want it are the people who can't handle it. As are the people who do want it.
On a similar note, I'd like to see hookers I can't afford banned, as well as cars I can't afford, words I don't know the meaning of, and any clothes that make me look fat.

The fark? I'd expect federal agencies to give much more weight to what is essentially a referendum.

This morning there was some documentary on CNBC about pot and. The part I saw was in Kentucky how its one of the states with the most growers etc and how they will spend a million bucks to fly around in the backwoods in blackhawks and burn 5 plants. Then they had about how Portugal is a lot looser with their drug laws and how they stress treatment. They interviewed the drug Czar and he was towing the "gateway drug" line and crime will increase. I dont even smoke and I stopped buying their shiat years ago.

2012-01-02 10:56:42 AM
Kerlikowski (the drug czar) had his assistant on Seattle radio the other day and here's their line:
* goverments get $20B in alcohol-related taxes but social costs are $150B
* governments get $15B in tobacco taxes but social costs are $175B
But remember: these are the guys who tell you that the high school kid was busted with 1 ounce of pot with a "street value" of $10,000.
An initiative has already been submitted for Washington state to legalize possession of marijuana.

This is exactly correct. The drug issue isn't the point, just a handy way to present it to the public. The real issue is protecting existing industry. Better, cheaper paper and clothing would be an issue to the timber and cotton industries, so can't let that happen.
I personally see this as the same issue as there was with Stevia sweetener in the 70's/80's and e-cigs now. When big industry decides that they can make money on it, it'll all of a sudden become the "wonder plant"

Its unfortunate that the controversy over marijuana has made it so difficult to get marijuana-derived drugs approved in the U.S. I dont know of any other drug where so much is knowm about its action yet the govt has made it so difficult to market the active ingredients as a pharmaceutical. This is one issue with the way mj is classified.

Well, it's a step in the right direction, I suppose.
...and thus we see the reason why Pot will never be legalized- Potheads who insist that Marijuana is absolutely harmless- hey, it's just like baby aspirin, right? It has no effects whatsoever, and it's not addictive! That's why Potheads have developed an entire culture around it, in a way that doesn't even happen with Heroin. (And that's not even an exaggeration. Heroin users, by and large, don't have magazines devoted to their lifestyle, and don't insist that Heroin has absolutely no physical or mental effects on it's users.)
I smoked Pot. When I was fourteen farking years old. But like most people, I stopped once I became an adult and had responsibilities. But Potheads, (who are in NO WAY like alcoholics, just ask them) insist that they smoke Pot because... uh, because no reason at all, because Pot magically has no effects, and even the smoke you're sucking into your lungs is somehow exactly like breathing in air.
The bottom line is that you're never going to convince rational adult human beings who AREN'T self-delusional idiots that Pot isn't a drug. Pot screws up your mental processes. Anyone that has ever used it knows that the entire POINT of using it is that it screws up your mental processes. I'm so sick of Pot threads devolving in to one of two standard arguments:
1: "Pot is harmless, like water" which is stupid,
or
2: "Pot is no worse than alcohol", which is moronic. Alcohol has killed more people and destroyed more lives than any other drug in history. We're supposed to be happy that Pot isn't any worse? Yeah, booze is legal. I'm not sure how that somehow means it's harmless, or that Pot should also be legal. Sorry Potheads, but booze has a longer history of societal acceptance. For the record, I don't drink any more either, and for the same reasons. Grown-Ups have kids and jobs and wives to worry about. Unfortunately, that means giving up a few things, like laying around wasted or drunk all weekend. That's a fact of life that Farkers, who for the most part still think it's cool to brag about having a beer, aren't generally mature enough to accept. But it's still true.
