Did we go through a time warp?

Thats awesome. Makes me wonder what company will replace them in that location 6 months from now when they're forced to shut down since they can't pay their bills.

I grew up with Vic 20 and then Commodore 64.. I need to buy one of these. Then I will be complete.

Niche marketing.

I was born in 1980 and was playing Star Ranger on my brother's C64 in '84 or '85. (Actually, continued to play Star Ranger and other games into the nineties on that thing.) My geek heartstrings are attached to the C64. As a modder, I like the idea of a modern PC (albeit with shiatty graphics) shoehorned into a C64 chassis. Something I've thought about doing myself, I might add.

But this product is aimed at a scant selection of computer users who are nostalgic about 80's hardware and aren't into PC gaming. And the ergonomics of that giant keyboard are atrocious. I think it's cool that Commodore is offering it, but they aren't going to sell many and in my mind they should be charging more for the top model.

/won't be buying one
//because my gaming rig is farking stupendous, that's why

How is that game? I've never been into mmorpgs but this one certainly piques my interest.

i'm enjoying it so far. i played in the beta then got it for Xmas. As MRPGs go, i'm liking it. It's pretty much a single player game though. Very story driven and it feels like your story. i'm playing an Imperial Agent and making all Light Side decisions. Which is fun because i have to lie about being good. i doubt i'll stay with it, esp once PlanetSide 2 or Guild Wars 2 are released.

It's good. It's basically a co-op kotor with 8 different stories you can play through.

Presumably the hipsters will love it, unless it's cool.

This is like one of those ideas you bounce off of someone saying "wouldn't it be cool if..." and then come to your senses 10 minutes later. It's going to take months for these guys to come to their senses.

Entertaining. I always avoided mmorpgs because of all the bad things I heard about WoW but you can play this game as a single player if you want. But it's not too difficult to team up with others who want to finish a mission.

The missions are fun. Some can be a bit repetitive but there is always a story behind them to follow and you can make your own decisions. I really like the space combat. After hours of walking around and killing things, doing the space combat is like a mini-game and gives a bit of a break from the game.

I'd say the hardest part about the game is understanding the in-game lingo, and all the small details when it comes to your inventory, character, and crafting skills.

I just threw mine in the recycle bin in the original box.

I even had the original receipt tucked in the little spiral bound user manual.

I was gonna say, where's the "POKE"?? Until I read your post. PEEK/POKE string packing made those 8-bit CPUs sizzle though.

Not impressed unless it comes with Amiga OS4 installed.

In 1983 I programmed an entire music video on the Comodore 64. Hard coded the graphics, timing, everything. Still have the video somewhere here at home. God bless the 64.

I've seen this and am honestly kind of disappointed. It's a PC with Linux running inside a C64 shaped case with the Commodore badge on it.

If it had a C64 direct-to-tv board lodged inside or at the very least a physical SID chip and Vice installed to run actual C64 software properly and had the original keyboard layout with PETscii characters printed on the keys, then it could work as both a comprehensive retro solution and a modern PC at the same time.

Beach Head 2 was OK, but the Bard's Tale series, the Ultima series, and, of course, Alternate Reality cemented my love for RPGs over strategy & twitch games.

mudpants: Will it run GEOS ?

It better.

I used to like the way GEOS would take my Brother 8-pin tractor fed dot matrix ribbon printer, with the parallel adapter on the back of my C64, and print the hell out of some fonts. It took about 10 passes on each line, but the print quality was better than anything I saw from a dot matrix on those IBMs and Apples.

/get off mah lawn.

2012-01-03 07:04:51 AM
Is this neat? sure. Will it sell? based on the fact that commodore has tried coming back what, 3-4 times now, kinda doubt it. I have commodore love, but a mini-PC stuffed inside a c-64 shell/keyboard does not exactly make me excited. This looks like something ben heck would do (I Know, I'll make this atari2600 portable, with an LCD screen, yes! will people want it? Maybe 2-3 people will!)
