Fog is believed to have been a factor in the ships running aground.

Well, that and shallow water, but I'm thinking it was more the shallow water part.

What a pity there wasn't a single Operating thetan on board who could have used "the Tech" to float the ship in the air with the power of his mind. If only this had happened in a town with a lot of Scientologists
