One Iowa GOP insider said he'd welcome Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota or Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to the fray: "All three are more palatable to the American people than the current slate of candidates."

Jon Huntsman is basically in that same tier of Republicans, and he has zero traction in Iowa.

It must be frustrating to want to support the candidate who'd start a nuclear war in the Middle East, impose a strict religious morality, disavow scientific research, and make women second-class citizens and realize there are NO Ayatollahs available to caucus for tomorrow.

"Oh, well. I guess Santorum is close enough for now."

What's with all of this sciency stuff????

Whomever wins the election clearly it was part of God's plan, no need for your fancy Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.

They have 708.96 - Jesusitus
co-morbididty - 290.56 Crazy Eyes, 290.58 Free Marketerous and 290.59 Tenancy to enjoy blowing up brown people.

Also if Corporations are people should we not have a DSM for them too. It would be the Ethical thing to do.

One of the nice features of being an Independent in Virginia is that I can vote in the Republican primaries, giving my support to the least electable candidate.

Considering that only Romney and Ron Paul made it on the ballot, it's an easy choice -- Romney is almost sane, save for his magic Mormon underwear. Ron Paul is nuttier than squirrel shiat.

2012-01-02 11:53:13 AM
As Jon Stewart has pointed out, the problem for Republican voters this year is that they want something that is nearly impossible. They want someone who is just as anti-intellectual as they are, but who won't trip over his words in debates (Perry) or spout a bunch of ignorant nonsense on scientific issues (Bachmann). They want someone who is a successful business owner, because business owners are gods apparently, but not SO successful that he was in a position to make a profit shipping jobs overseas (Romney). They want an extreme small-government candidate, but they don't want anyone who would abolish federal drug laws (Paul).

It's going to be fun watching this drag out through the winter and spring.

I've heard that it will include sex addiction, which is obviously Newt's area.

Come to think about it, no one's ever diagnosed him with that. He's just a cheating asshole.

It's going to be fun seeing how they try to marry their belief system--is it really politics at this point?--to reality and fail miserably. Your garden-variety Republican voter votes via slogan, and it's funny to see them figure out that maybe they've been taken for a ride for years. They won't admit it, but I imagine most of them feel incredibly stupid right now and it only makes them that much more angrier.

Then again, seeing anybody who isn't miserable in their lives makes them angrier, so that's not much of a change. But they pretty much blew last year dicking around with various theatrics that went nowhere, so it'll be interesting to see what way this year takes them. They're stuck with the candidates they have and it's just a mess all around.

Part of me wants them to go with Ron Paul, just to solidify their bigotry.

Pure brilliance.

Suggested solutions:
Strom Thurmond is still pretty fresh. He only passed in 2003. Do I get a second to that?
McCain is still here and he can pick between 2 bat shat crazy runningmates. Palin or Bachmann. Or better yet both could share the Viceness. A real 2fer!

Mitt is the "high functioning" one.

Michele Bachmann = 306.51.

The Republican party is splintering right now. The Democrats went through a similar episode about 10 years ago, but it appears that this one is setting up to be a much bigger affair. I'm sure by now the struggle between the groups, the Tea Party, the Conservative Christians, the Old Guard, and the Fiscal Conservatives (neo-Libertarians). You may divide them differently, they commingle a bit.

To the detriment of the Republican party, it's happening over the 2012 campaign, hence the group of jokers and milquetoasts they're putting up. Mitt is just the Republican Kerry, and really so is Huntsman.

I have to say, though, this is the most entertaining presidential campaign I've seen in my life! Amazing since it's already been going on for a year now. How can it not be when the news was talking about the "Santorum Surge" the last couple of days!

Kittypie070: Michele Bachmann = 306.51.

I always figured 318.0 to 318.2, myself.

To gain traction as a Republican candidate you have to speak in tongues

You can see the impish relish in the anchorperson's eyes every time they utter the phrase, too.

Sybarite: One Iowa GOP insider said he'd welcome Indiana Gov.

This. About the only one of the bunch who can have a real "conversation" about issues, but the fundies and tea party loons won't touch him.

Screw caucuses, Iowa ought to be decided in a triple-threat Jello wrestling match between Palin, Bachmann, and O'Donnell

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Gingrich is a 302.84.

dumbobruni: i am hoping for a long and derpy primary season.

come on Bachmann and Perry! your country needs you!

No. Romney will barely win Iowa, win big in NH, and after that, no one will give money to anyone else. The primary season is going to be less exciting than ever.

The Name: As Jon Stewart has pointed out, the problem for Republican voters this year is that they want something that is nearly impossible.

Also, you have to believe in American exceptionalism, just don't practice or pursue American exceptionalism because it makes you an Ivy League elitist and out of touch with the common man. Just sit there and pretend like those cheddar cheese jalepeno poppers at TGIF McFunsters are God's gift to the culinary world, that Mitch Albom is better than Milan Kundera,
