Why not trust the invisible hand of the free market? If students don't like the course, they won't sign up and it will go away. If they like it, who are you to interfere with their freedom of choice? Why do you hate America so much?

Does getting pepper-sprayed count as extra credit?
Columbia University is offering a new course on Occupy Wall Street next semester - sending upperclassmen and grad students into the field for full course credit.
The class is taught by Dr. Hannah Appel, who boasts about her nights camped out in Zuccotti Park.
As many as 30 students will be expected to get involved in ongoing OWS projects outside the classroom, the syllabus says.

Curious little thing here to you OWS-for credit students: your prof already has tenure, or just a teaching job. You have neither. If you manage to get an arrest record because you're prof is batshiat and said it's ok for to be one as well, your finanical aid may be in jeopardy if the school deems whatever you did to get arrested violates school financial aid policies. You would be wise to check out what will stop those checks coming in while banging on crap and setting shiat on fire.

how about a class where 20 students have to run for various political offices and write about their experiences.
I mean if you really want to change things, then you have to really get involved and you have to really exposed how farked up things are.

Shouldn't participating in the political process via protesting, campaigns and the like be rolled into a Civics class? It's sadly telling we need specific classes for this kind of stuff that should already be being taught in a more general manner in other classes.

It must have escaped me, I thought that the message of OWS was that there is a small clique of very powerful, very rich people who game the system to ensure that, no matter what, they continue to grow more powerful and rich.
Now I find out that it was protesting student loans.

The media has really done a great job of discrediting any movement that was there to begin with. It started out with it mostly being clean cut college kids, educated middle class (or what passes for it these days anyway) and angry blue collar folks. Only a handful of people were the hippy-dippy type playing hacky-sack and {insert stereotype here}.
But since the so called "liberal" media started out by outright ignoring the protesters and only moved onto focusing on the loons for their "look how wacky these folks are, am I right?" stories, they've managed to once again turn the very people they were fighting for against them. Propoganda and tooling public opinion has always been an art, but they've downright mastered it these days. Even the last bastion of free information, the internet, is going down the proverbial tubes with tons of laws in the pipe to limit and control what is done there according to corporate desires.
It will take nothing less than a full societal collapse to go in the other direction now. Not that i want that, like some sort of twisted anarchy-fetishist fantasy. But I don't see how corporate control is going to be shaken until people can't afford the electricity to keep their Fox News and Rushbo AM Radio pumping into their house.
