This happend over 60 years ago so take a chill pill, the "village" doesn't exist any more and the buildings are just concrete block shells that are not worth the effort to turn into livable housing. The same thing happend to the people of Buckenham Tofts, Langford, Stanford, Sturston, Tottington and West Tofts when STANTA was created in Norfolk. These places are about as close to sparcly populated as you will find in England unless you want to build on moorland.

Actually it would probably cost more. It's far easier to lay water, sewerage, gas and electricity services when you are building the foundations than to go to an existing building and try to work underneath them. Ditto for fitting electrical wiring throughout the house. Ditto for plumbing and heating. Ditto for damp proofing.

Plus, being miles from anywhere how are any people housed there going to be able to find work?

The government has just announced they are going to take action against people on high incomes living in subsidised housing and people who profit from subletting. That will make a huge difference, far more than a couple of dozen houses in the middle of nowhere.
