So farking ridiculous. I mean, 720 laws would have been OK. 730, 740...still fine. 750, some might have said that's toeing the line, living right up to the knife's edge, playing with matches. And some of them might have been right. But 760? Jesus Christ, that's ridiculous. That's fascism. That's liberal fascism. That's against the constitution. We need to retake our country, make a law that you can't pass more than, say 600 new laws a year. No, 500. No, let's say 400 new laws a year and they have to be written in at least a 14 point font and can't be longer than 30 pages, tops. Thirty single sided pages. One inches margins required. It's time, people. It's time to bring some sanity back.

2012-01-01 05:13:21 PM
I was pleasantly surprised. Most of those laws actually made sense.

That's crazy for such a small state.

It's almost as if modern society is more complex than what it was years ago

Most of those laws make pretty good sense. I didn't see any that were truly stupid that will really impact anything of substance.

The ones that are petty and unnecessary are the open-carry ban, the facebook bullying thing, and foster care ones.

Number of laws passed in Somalia?

2012-01-01 05:48:33 PM
I wonder how many new laws submitter's state got and what they are.

2012-01-01 05:50:34 PM
Oh, and the ones that I think are excellent are:

1) Can't use credit reports as a reason not to hire someone
2) 10-Year bans for repeat DUI offenders.
3) The insurance conflict of interest re drugs thing.
4) The underage prostitution thing
5) Wine over the internet.

ginandbacon: Number of laws passed in Somalia?

None. It still remains a libertarian paradise where lightbulbs and death panels are still legal.

Excellent, so they are all moving there, right?

Is that lot? Without context, that number is totally meaningless.

I have no problem with most of the examples given. If that's a representative sample then I see no reason to get my knickers in a twist.

Cyber-bullying: allows schools to suspend students for bullying classmates on social networking sites such as Facebook.

Huh... this one should spark some debate. Suspend kids for off-school activity? More protection for kids who are bullied? Several sides to this issue, which I'm sure has already been covered in an earlier Fark thread.

Oregon one-upped them on the DUI offenders. As of January 1st, even if it's your first DUI conviction, your vehicle has to have an interlock device installed.

Raves: requires any state agency that plans an event with more than 10,000 people on state property to conduct a threat assessment before the event.

I was going to make fun of the author for suggesting that California sets up raves on state property, but then I Googled it and found that indeed they do. The more you know.

I don't have any problems with that.

I think on DUI #3 you should get a lifetime ban on driving.

In oregon you do. Its also a felony if the 3rd w/in 10 years. Of course by "lifetime" they mean you can petition the judge for reinstatement after 10 years at the earliest, but reinstatement is completely discretionary.

That's better than most states. If I could pass a DUI law, it would read like this:

First DUI: lose license for a year, must display a special license plate for 5 years that reads "Drunk Driver On Board", License cannot be reinstated until $10k penalty is paid and one year suspension is complete. Get caught driving under suspension? The clock resets.

Second DUI: lose license for 5 years. cannot get license back until $25k fine is paid.

Third DUI: No driving, ever. 5 years in Max sec prison.

Driving after 3rd DUI? 25 years in prison.

Watch how fast DUIs drop, and how fast Anheisher Busch deploys an army of lobbyists.

Fine. Since they don't care, just make it easier to spot them. How about a decal of a tortilla? A corn one. Bright enough to see... perhaps yellow. Also, make it six-side so it's not confused for anything else.

I kid.

Students don't have all the rights they are suppose to have in the first place so I don't see why adding this makes it worse. Public schools can suspend you on a whim.

We had zero tolerance for fighting at my school. If you did anything other than stand there when getting your nose flattened you got suspended.

Bail: requires that people extradited to California to face criminal charges face $100,000 in bail in addition to any bail already issued for the underlying offense.

It's the night before you move to start a job in Oregon. Your crazy neighbor claims you hit her because she is crazy. Before you are even notified that there is a warrant for your arrest (which can take 2 months for the DA to process), you moved to Oregon. 3 years later you get pulled over cuz your tail light is out, when they run your license, they get you on the warrant. Bam , added $100,000 to your bail.

That's what I said!

California does have some good laws for employees. For example, employerscan't take away vacation time from you if you don't use it. They can't force you to buy uniforms from them. They can't deduct wages if you break or lose something. Etc..

Except it doesn't work. People continue driving with or without a license. States are finally getting smart to that and dealing with the problem more pragmatically (such as interlock devices).

I imagine the reason for that is to make sure that anyone buying alcohol has to have someone check their ID. I doubt it was too much of a problem - any teenager willing to hang around the Target checkouts until the coast was clear to buy beer with no one seeing would be much more likely to get it from an older brother or raid dad's liquor cabinet. But it still seems pretty reasonable to me.

I know! If companies aren't free to sell expired dairy products to infants, what's next? Soon they won't be able to sell classic Halloween costumes such as "oily rags and a lighter", the "invisible pedestrian", and the "Johnny Spaceman Suit"!

I personally wouldn't hire someone who doesn't know that most background check companies handle both the criminal and financial background checks and grab their information from a variety of sources.

But I'm an old fashion type of guy - if you can't handle your money in real life - you shouldn't be put in a position to handle millions if not billions for my company. The credit check is one bit of information that allows us to figure out the risk of hiring someone.

Self-checkouts don't work that way. If you scan alcohol, you have to show your ID to an employee before it will let you pay.

Would be far easier to just steal it.

Yeah, but when Micky D's is asking 16 yr olds if they can get credit reports on them for a burger flipping job? Job market in Cali is ridiculous, so it's nice that we at least got one fewer parameter employers can toss us for.

I'm sure costs due to intentional damage can still be collected from an employee. But take my case - I work with welders that run around 3 or 4 grand new, and a CNC machine that is at least $15,000. Hell, a decently sized wrench will run you more than 20 dollars, and shiat sometimes just breaks. I'd rather not lose an hour or two worth of pay because craftsman's warranty ran out.
