I met Nudie when I was about 10 years old. His wife was from my hometown and they were visiting her family. My freind and I saw the most out of this world car parked in a grocery store parking lot and just stood gape mouthed staring at it. It had longhorns as a hood ornament, pistols as doorhandles, silver dollars embedded in the dashboard, cowhide seats, etc. Western kitsch to the max. Then this short little guy strolls out of the store wearing the gaudiest outfit Mankato has ever seen on a man or woman. We knew immediately it was his car. He came over and chatted with us for a while. Really nice guy. Not Hollywood in his attitude at all. He didn't even seem to mind that we snickered a little when he introduced himself as Nudie. I didn't know for many years that he was famous, but I remembered him and that car.

His grave is also really cool and just a few minutes from the museum.

A good tribute album of his is called "Timeless." Hank III, Keith Richards, Keb Mo, and Emmylou Harris do some great covers.

Keb Mo's cover of "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry" is worth the price all by itself.

There were plenty of drunken/drug addicted musicians who blazed the trail of excess to an early grave long before Hank.

From what I read, Hank didn't drink very much by rock star standards, but he was so skinny, even a couple of beers would get him shiat-faced.

I gotta disagree with that. Jr has had a hell of a career of his own. He doesn't stand up to big Hank but seeing as how Sr would be on the Mt Rushmore of mid to late 20th century American music, few do.

Punkrock 2000, I think Charlie Parker died a couple years after Hank Williams (maybe 1955?)....but I give you major points for noting that self-destructive behavior preceded rock musicians by a good while--thanks for the Bix and Berigan!

/I just saw the (taxidermied) "Trigger" and "Bullet" in the Rose Parade, and mused about pop stardom (whether for actors or musicians) and how--(one example being the closing of the Roy Rodgers museums in CA, then in Branson)--fame is still a pretty fleeting thing (even as we throw around terms like "legendary" and "superstar" and "immortal"). The culture--and posterity--is always at the ready, eager to turn away from the past for the Next Big Thing.

It was a George Barris Kustom job (the same guy who did the Batmobile for the TV show and the Munster's car). I cen't seem to find pics of it on the interwebz at the moment, but it was really over-the-top even for Barris' work.

The guy grew up broke in the depression and was sick for most of his life. Throw in constantly being on the road and a lot of drinking and pills and it's bound to age anyone.

Shiat, I remember hearing that the coroner who did Charlie Parker's autopsy overshot his age of death by nearly 20 years.

I love this guy's music.
