Let me know when they have a wave of burgle-arson-arceny. That's when shiat gets real.

Yes, because if someone torched your car tomorrow, the only thing that you'd have to worry about is your insurance company.

No way is this the work of one person. Considering the area, I'm guessing it's a gang with nothing better to do.

This. I'm in the area where the fires have started and just got a new car this month. Definitely thankful for semi-secure parking, but right now I'm wishing it was a vault.

I just read this story on CNN right before coming here... Apparently the mayor of West Hollywood was quite eager to classify this as "a new form of domestic terrorism."

That word seems to get thrown around quite a farking bit nowadays. Makes me twitchy. Not the arson, but the "terrorism" modifier. Some asshat lighting cars on fire is not terrorism.

/Oh, by the way, Obama signed NDAA yesterday if I'm not mistaken. The "real terrorists" have won.

What's with all the carports? Does no one out there have an actual garage? Perhaps the person(s) is torching cars in the open or carports because of the easy access. How quickly can you turn a carport into a garage?

My favorite is 'terroristic threats'. My autospell has never even hard of the word 'terroristic' but it now regularly gets added to trumped up charges for just about anything where you might have yelled at someone.

Depends on the build of the carport, your access to tools and materials, personal skill, and city code.

If it's permissable to do it (and not some bizarre code-housing-thing where you have to declare it an official renovation/addition/whatever), and you have all the stuff, and the carport was built to withstand the additional weight (that is, has good strong foundation and uprights)...a couple hours?

If it's a few 2x4's stuck a foot in the ground with sheet metal bolted to the top and no structure...a full day. Because you're going to need to tear down and rebuild that mother. Make it 2 days if you're going to set anything in concrete, just to give it time to set.

But Hollywood/West Hollywood are densely populated areas where people tend to live in apartments, not houses. The parking areas are at street level, often with no garage doors (our building doesn't, for example):

Because nobody in California ever shoots anybody else, right? Frankly, I like living in a state where it isn't legal to murder someone just because they're f*cking with your worldly possessions that would take you a whole 24 hours to replace.

There's been arsonists capable of this before. In the mid 1990s Seattle had a fellow by the name of Paul Keller. He eventually set 32 fires they know about, over a period of a few weeks.

We didn't call it domestic terror, because it was pre-911. If only they would have, he could be serving longer than 99 years now.

And yes, West Coast construction (lots and lots of exposed wood, very little brick, lots of open car ports) lends itself to this.

2012-01-01 03:13:00 PM
Two thoughts. First: Link (new window)

Second: In the 8th photo a guy, looking over the damage to his apartment, is wearing a shirt that says, "I'm having a nice day. Don't screw it up!" Which is hilarious.

Yeah. According to the Wiki Keller was convicted on 32, but admitted to setting 44 more. Often 3 or 4 a night as I recall. And MC 900 Foot Jesus was considered his inspiration, leading that song about serial arson being banned off the radio here.

So my moneys on one guy, who maybe resembles Neil Patrick Harris.

No junk food, just earthly goods
I ate weird berries in the woods
Now I'm seeing colors, I'm getting higher
I think I'll start a forest fire

There's a forest fire climbin the hill
Burning wealthy California homes
Better run run run run run run
From the fire

But some of us stay and watch
And we think of your insurance costs
And we laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh
At your lives

Windows covered with bars
Security guards
Is that a house or a fortress?
Against the rest of the world

Windows covered with bars
Security guards
Is that a house or a prison
How you gonna get out?

Electric bull and your tennis courts
Pink sports cars and your boats
Getting fried fried fried fried fried fried
By the fire

Windows covered with bars
Floodlights for the yard
It's a pleasure to watch you
Watch it all melt

But hey!
What about the cocaine
Stockpiled in the basement
Be a hero and save it
You know you're gonna need it

Where's your brand new pretty wife
She might still be inside
Either save her or your cocaine from the fire

But the gates and doors are locked
'Cause the burglar alarms went off
Ever wonder why we laugh laugh
At your lives

Windows covered with bars
Fences spiked with barbed wire
Never looked so helpless
Engulfed in flames

Cameras watchin' the walls
Don't forget the dogs
Now you're trapped in your prison
How you gonna get out

See the gerbil
Run run run run run run run run run
run run run run run run run run run
run run run run run run run run run
From the fire
