This has to be up there with Netflix/the hiring of Paul Christoforo as worst business decision ever.

Decca could always spot talent.

A lot of the Beatles early tunes were pretty mediocre. They didn't get good until Revolver which was after Dylan turned them on to pot and told them to write something a little bit deeper than "I wanna hold your hand".

2012-01-01 01:29:45 PM
They obviously didn't have the Best drummer for the job at the time.

I'll admit they were somewhat over rated. But most over rated ? Not even close.

Those guys wrote some great tunes.

I wonder what became of the exec who thought guitar bands were on the way out.

2012-01-01 01:36:38 PM
Let it be, people. Decca tried to sign them but something was missing. They said, we can work it out, but the Beatles wanted more money, and money can't buy you love. They couldn't come together on the deal, and it was one of those hello goodbye types of results. This was very typical in the rock scene of yesterday. Bands would play eight days a week but couldn't even get a ticket to ride the long and winding road of stardom.

Here comes the sun, I should probably get some sleep now. Carry on.

Probably ended up in the Bush admin where he was consistently promoted.

The Beatles lost Decca and got EMI's George Martin,a producer who really knew how to work with them and credited to contributing to their success.

Sometimes you are lucky in who turns you down.

I was 17 when they hit the U.S. Thought they were the dumbest and goofiest sounding, looking band of all time. Like me,they matured and became cool and revelant and I still love their music.
( though now I listen more to Luther Allison,Buddy Guy,Susan Tedeschi )

Not, sure if you're snarking out, but THIS. I've never understood the fascination with the Beatles. I've heard all about how they revolutionized the minutiae of recording and blah, blah, blah. I've never found their songs compelling and found their personalities downright repulsive. Though, I must say that I truly loved Ringo in Caveman! Now, that movie had the best music number of all time!!!

I hate the Beatles (not trolling, I really do think they're vastly overrated) and that was like shooting fish in a barrel with a yellow submarine

The Beatles early stuff (where they became popular) was/is bubblegum crap, no better than a Backstreet Boys or N'Sync. There later stuff was good, but their "good" stuff is not what brought them to the forefront.

That's what made them so great. They could write great pop tunes....nobody was writing their own tunes back then...and the grew into writing masterpieces like Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road and the White Album.

The Decca Audition tapes are easy to find on bootlegs, and, I suppose, now on teh intarwebs. It was a pretty good performance, even Pete Best's drumming wasn't distractingly bad. But, hey, Decca signed The Tremeloes instead, so, they got their own superstars out of the deal.

the cover of "Searchin" was god awful and the rest were ok for house bands. based on those it's not surprising Decca turned them down.
