I really hope it's rebooted origin stories because man I can't get enough of superhero origin stories.

I'm kind of interested in Prometheus.

I can't be the only person sick of the "OMG movies suck so hard these days" headlines here on Fark. There are brilliant movies of all genres released every year, and next year is going to have some amazing ones, both superhero and not. Stop biatching, subby.

Well, don't forget about the new hobbit movie coming out this summer--

Will watch Prometheus. And Batman because the first two were good, not because of anything I've seen/read about it.

I have a fleeting interest in seeing The Great Gatsby. We'll see how I feel 12 months from now though.

Daniel Day Lewis and Steven Spielberg releasing "Lincoln". Tim Burton and Johnny Depp team up for "Dark Shadows". Quentin Tarantino turns his homage-meter to 11 for spaghetti westerns this coming year. These all sound like win-win films for non-comic-book moviegoers.

Precisely that.

And I say that as someone who isn't exactly a big fan of Burton.

While I thoroughly enjoyed Taken ,the prospect of a sequel isn't only unappealing,it seems unnecessary. Who gets snatched now,Famke Janssen? Xander Berkeley?

It's always a good year for movies if you know where to look for your movies or can wait for the DVD release. "Drive" wasn't that popular a movie though it is a great action film. Not the best film of the year, but pretty good. I'm sure I'll find more than 3D films and super hero movies to watch. "We Need To Talk About Kevin" looks pretty good but I bet it won't even get a wide release like your typical super hero flick.

Also, this.

I wouldn't wholesale-paint a year's movie season on the basis of superhero movies alone. It's a ridiculous premise.

which is prob also true

Ginnungagap42: I'm looking forward to "John Carter", directed by Pixar's Andrew Stanton. (new window)

I saw the trailer for that. Why does Mars look like Arizona? And why isn't "Mars" in the title? The book is called "John Carter of Mars", not "John Carter of Outside Phoenix".

I guess "Mars" is sort of box office poison. Mission to Mars, Red Planet, Ghosts of Mars, Invaders from Mars, Mars Attacks! (even though I liked that one). Total Recall is cool but you had to buy a ticket before you knew it took place on Mars.

Simply calling it John Carter reminds me of those USA tv movies with that douche from ER.

i'm not familiar with the course material, but the previews for that made it look like the scripts for Avatar, Star Wars, Ferngully, and the Hobbit all puked into one pile and it formed its own movie.

Cliffnotes - The probable good ones are: John Carter (March); Battleship (May); The Hobbit (December)

JANUARY: Rampart; We Need to Talk About Kevin; Coriolanus; Red Tails; Haywire; One for the Money; and "Beauty and the Beast" again. fark you, Hollywood. fark you.

FEBRUARY: The Phantom Menace," now in 3-D; Ghost Rider" sequel; Tyler Perry's Good Deeds; The Woman in Black; This Is Not a Film. Why the fark were these even made?

MARCH: Dr. Seuss' The Lorax; The Hunger Games; John Carter; Being Flynn; The Raven; Playing the Field; 21 Jump Street; Snow White; Wrath of the Titans. Well, 'John Carter' might not suck.

APRIL: American Reunion; Scary Movie 5; The Three Stooges; The Lucky One;; Wettest County; Seeking a Friend at the End of the World; A Bullet in the Head; Titanic.
More shiat that shouldn't have been made.

MAY: The Avengers; Dark Shadows; Battleship; Men in Black 3; What to Expect When You're Expecting; The Dictator; Moonrise Kingdom. fark you, Marvel, and the DRM you rode in on - boycott. The Battleship may not suck.

JUNE: Snow White and the Huntsman; Jack the Giant Killer; Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted; Brave; Rock of Ages; Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter; Prometheus. More shiat. I think I'll go camping instead.

JULY: Neighborhood Watch; The Matchmaker; Ted; some crappy sequels; The Amazing Spider-Man remake; The Dark Knight Rises. Crap.

AUGUST: Warm Bodies; The Apparition; Sinister; 7500; The Possession; The Bourne Legacy; The Odd Life of Timothy Green; Total Recall; The Expendables. Mostly crap, and why not release the horror movies in farking OCTOBER?

SEPTEMBER: Resident Evil sequel; Dredd remake; Argo; Savage. Aaargh! shiat.

OCTOBER: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween remakes; The Big Wedding; Taken 2; Frankenweenie; The Gangster Squad. More shiat.

NOVEMBER: My Mother's Curse; Parental Guidance; Gravity; 47 Ronin; Skyfall; The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part II. Maybe the Bond film won't suck too much.

DECEMBER: Django Unchained; The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey; This is 40; The Life of Pi; The Great Gatsby remake; Lincoln.

The year looks awsome. I can't wait to see all the movies listed in the article.

Meh.

But then, barring the occasional accident, Hollywood has been little more than "Meh" for a very long time now. It's where talent goes to die. Good thing Hollywood isn't the only place where they make movies.

Well, there's Promotheus, I guess.

/yeah, I watch Hollywood movies

SockMonkeyHolocaust: I really hope it's rebooted origin stories because man I can't get enough of superhero origin stories.

Oh! I... I couldn't see that this particular thing is the problem I have with all the super hero movies. I mean Kick Ass was fine, but another Spiderman where he gets envenomed by a radioactive/genetically altered spider? I think we get it. We don't need a reimagining or a retelling. It doesn't really matter. Just put it as background panels beneath the title cards.

It's called "A Princess of Mars." It reads like Jules Verne In Space. Too busy for my opinion, but it should sit well with the ADHD teens of today.

Drive was a horrible movie and you should feel ashamed for defending it. Like, "caught fooling around with your midget sister", ashamed.

You have your authors mixed up. Charles Dickensons was the guy who wrote A Christmas Story. But The Great Gatsby was written by Sinclair Lewis, who by all accounts was a really nice guy.

Unless it's Jonah Hex, in which case no one liked the movie.

/these aren't "obscure indy comics" getting movies. In fact, the cool obscure Indy comic that got a live action property in recent history was Walking Dead, and everyone still likes the comic and the show.

Dredd is looking interesting bu it seems to be slipping under most people's radar. Production design is realistically dark and grimly and dredd keeps his helmet on. Also, no awful comic sidekick.

I was actually referring to how these threads usually go (the reaction to a glut of superhero flicks), as opposed to the inevitable follow-up thread. In a thread like this, they'll wonder why some microprint emo drivel doesn't get a film adaptation. Then the microprint emo drivel does get an adaptation, and they're angry because it was totally a secret before the movie.

You know what will fix this? A movie about a spy betrayed by their government so they take revenge. We don't get nearly enough of those movies. *eyeroll*

The book is called "A Princess of Mars". And since the property is in the public domain, there was another movie direct to dvd starring Traci Lords released a couple years ago. It's truly terrible. It took the title A Princess of Mars.
