It's simply not Sherlock Holmes. It's just a random action movie in the Victorian era. They don't even attempt to have Holmes act like Holmes in game of shadows. He does almost zero investigation or deduction at all.
And Tom Cruise is the best runner ever in movies. Dude knows how to leg it and make you feel the effort.

This. I saw the first and won't be seeing the second because of this. If they called it something other than "Sherlock Holmes" it would just be another forgettable action movie instead of an object of deserved scorn and derision.
Also, Tom Cruise is just short. So he can pump his little legs really fast so it makes him look like he's going 30mph.

I actually liked the first one. The second one is, IMO, far worse. Any semblence of the detective there was in the first is basically gone in this one. I seriously think most of the time he uses deduction is in planning his fights. Seriously.

That's how I saw it. I read most of the Holmes books as a kid and there was a shocking lack of shiat blowing up and Matrix-fu in the books when compared to these movies. The only "deductions" in the film were more like those in the TV show Psych. Only without the cop girl who looks like Alicia Silverstone.
Mission Impossible could have used a stronger villain but otherwise it was solid. I especially like how they didn't use and even made fun of the silly masks they used in the other movies and TV shows.

MI:GP was incredibly mediocre. Atrocious CGI during Kremlin bombing and Cruise running from sandstorm. Had a certain sense of silliness, especially in the beginning that was out of place and unwarranted for a movie like this. Pegg's style of comic relief inappropriate as well, would have rather had Rhames back in the role. Patton was a bad addition to the cast, as was Holloway, for the limited screen time that he had.
Cruise can jump from a car at 70mph on the highway unharmed and the person whose car he slammed into can also be thrown from the vehicle unharmed? A tracking device in the suitcase good for half a mile? W.t.f? Worldwide GPS tracker with their technology would have been a no-brainer. Nuclear missile nearly hits a US city. US would have detected the missile much earlier and fired retaliatory nukes long before the Russian missile got into US airspace. Cruise's team's efforts would have made no difference at that point.
Easily the weakest film in the MI series.

Mission Impossible was really bad. The opening scene is so corny I swore it was going to turn out to be some kind of cheesy movie within a movie type of thing. But no, they were serious. I don't mind a 'suspend belief' film but this has so many cringe-worthy moments that its just no fun to watch.

eh, Sherlock Holmes was pretty forgettable. Not bad, just not much too it. I was also annoyed that the film had rather dark lighting as it made some of it hard to discern what was going on. That said, as much as I love Simon Pegg and Brad Bird, I'm really not buying the idea that any Mission Impossible film was better.

Here's some news to ring in the New Year: Chipwrecked has now outgrossed The Muppets.
Reminds me of when I saw the Muppets. Twice during the screening, an entire family got up and left the theater. You could tell it was the childrens' idea because both times they were the ones leading the exodus and it was the parents who were dragging their heels and had their heads craned up towards the screen so they could catch us much of the movie as they possibly could before finally having to throw in the towel. I remember thinking to myself that once they were out in the lobby, wishing those parents were then telling the kids "I'm going to remember this next time you want to go see a movie I don't want to go see. Don't even think about asking us to take you to see Chipwrecked".
But then I don't have kids, so I can't appreciate how much this is far easier said than done.

I thought the scene in the forest in Sherlock was beautifully shot, though.
Also, maybe I'm in the minority, but I love the first Brian De Palma-directed MI. It's sleek, sexy, and the action sequences hold up great years later. I can watch it again and again.

Parents who need to do a better job overruling their kids. Kinda like the Pinocchio/Goofy Golf debate from Close Encounters.
"So kids, tomorrow night we can either see some stupid chipmunk movie that is going to be the sane CGI rodents singing forgettable pop tunes in pitchshifted voices or we can see Tintin, which has action, adventure, pirates, mystery, daring escapes, wild chases, exotic places and you'll have a wonderful time. Speaking of which, didn't Holmes shoot up coke? They leave that out of the films for some unknown reason.
There's a line in the newest movie that mentions he's been living off a few strange items, including coca leaves, which are what cocaine is derived from. In the original stories, there are a couple of references to injecting cocaine solution.
If you want the most faithful depiction of the original stories, go for the earlier Granada television versions or the current modern BBC series. I think the current films are fun and a different spin on a character who has been painted into a tight corner by repetitive depictions based on the Gillette play. The texts aren't even always consistent in their description of Holmes and his behavior (or Watson's war wounds, for that matter). I'd like to see more of the deduction as it happens but it is a tricky storytelling technique since the plots rely on Holmes being a few steps ahead of everyone else.
I really like Jude Law as Watson and his chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. They work very well together. Both movies also aren't exactly family films in the usual sense, but they are action adventures with a lot of comedic parts and don't contain a great deal of objectionable content for younger viewers. That's probably one of the reasons they have done so well as holiday releases.

I thought Mission Impossible was pretty good. I liked how their high tech gadgets kept failing. The team kept making mistakes that they had to recover from or improvise around. This kept the tension high and made the movie more interesting than a typical action movie where the heroes do everything perfect.

That was strange because it was written by Diablo Cody, who also wrote "Juno". In Juno I found Ellen Page's character to be adorable and likable but wanted to slap Diablo Cody with some manner of fish product for her insipid dialog. In Young Adult, I found Charlize Theron's character reprehensible but that's what they were going for. And somehow Diablo Cody's dialog was actually words that real people might actually say. I also liked that the main character didn't learn anything at the end. That was refreshing.

I liked that part a lot, that these bad ass field agents, even the technically minded geek agents, didn't quite know how to use the semi-futuristic shiat they were given. And none of their gadgets were completely out of the realm of possibility. I'm talking to you, invisible car from Die Another Day. And like I said before, they made a joke out of the goofy mask shiat that used to be a MI staple.
It could have used a better bad guy and it could have been more of a team effort like the original TV shows were. But Tom Cruise did let that other guy do some acrobatic shiat, so that's something.

Your description is essentially why I have zero desire to see this movie.
From what I understand, this movie centers upon a person who is an asshole, treats other people badly and just does that until the movie ends and she learns nothing.

Absolutely, but usually there's something else at play, a lesson for the rest of us watching it. The most obvious example I can think of is There Will Be Blood, where the narcissism and hate held by Plainview is partly the point of the movie. But what's the point of Young Adult? What's the theme, exactly, which justifies me watching someone be an unrepentant piece of crap for two hours?
