"It was hard losing Richard so early on but it was a great gift to find Michael to pick up those reins and it was a gift to have two Dumbledores to work with," Rickman said. "The rest of the cast stayed steady. You didn't see the cast come and go, just get taller."

I thought the changing of the Dumbledores worked very well. The first two books showed Dumbledore as a more whimsical figure who showed more concern than anger. And Harris was good at that. Gambon was then able to take on the darker and powerful forms of Dumbledore with aplomb.

No. Alan Rick-man killed. Dumble-dore.

And this holy shiat revelation:

Rickman's Hogwarts odyssey was singular in one major way: Early on, years before the ending of the bookshelf series, "Potter" author J.K. Rowling took him aside and revealed the secret back story of Snape, trusting Rickman and Rickman alone with one of the biggest twists in contemporary popular fiction. That set up the actor up to portray Snape as something more complicated (and more tragic) than mere a black-caped villain.

Talk about spoilers.

Snape kills Dumbledore? You fark! You ruined it for me.
How did he kill him? With an arrow to the knee?

SystemFault: As I recall, the entire cast (at least for the first film) was composed entirely of Brits with one exception: Rickman, and he at the insistence of Rowling herself.

That would be interesting, if Rickman weren't English.

I also agree with your Gary Oldman counter point.

If you like Oldman rent his directorial debut, "nil by mouth". Loosely based on his childhood experiences in the London slums. both his mum and sister are in the movie. Its not a very heart warming story, but very powerful.

He won't get nominated. It's like when people suggested Ian McDiarmid should get a nod for playing the Emperor in Star Wars.

/Ian was pretty damn good in those movies
//Rickman is pretty damn good in lots of stuff

Rickman is good in a lot of stuff, but it's all one character: Rickman. "By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged!" vs "I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death..." All the same intonation. Same dramatic pauses. Same facial expressions.

Rickman is like paprika. You can't put in every dish, but the ones you can put it in taste great. But they taste just like every other dish with paprika in it.

The same can be said of Al Pacino, Jim Carey, and every other Hollywood actor that people refer to as "iconic." Most people like to know what to expect when they go to the movies. Actors with range are applauded, but rarely loved. Even Leo DiCaprio, who was a freaking amazing actor when he was younger, eventually settled down into the Leo DiCaprio character and never really plays anything different. Box office is king, baby.

The reason the Potter flicks got no Oscar love is that they weren't that good. Oh, I liked them for the most part, they were good fun, but not Oscar material. Not in writing, directing (possible exception being PoA), or in the performances.

Alan Rickman is an absolute chick magnet. The sleepy bedroom eyes, the height, the voice...there's just something about that man.

I myself watch "Die Hard" simply to enjoy Hans Gruber's beard and that sweet, sweet suit.

Beg to differ: "Rickman was born in South Hammersmith, London, to a working class family, the son of Margaret Doreen Rose (née Bartlett), a housewife, and Bernard Rickman, a factory worker.[1] Rickman's mother was from Wales and a Methodist, and his father was of Irish Catholic background."

So, technically not an Englishman, he is a Briton.

I still remember seeing Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and literally crossing my legs and going UNNHHH when Alan came on in full Sheriff of Nottingham regalia. Somehow I didn't connect him to Hans Gruber until afterwards. Still, sexy, SEXY man.

It sometimes is tiring for me to have women come up to me in bars and ask me to speak like Hans Gruber. I try to tell them I only vaguely look like Alan Rickman but they've already got my machine gun out and are telling me how I've bewitched their mind and ensnared their senses.

The man has been a treasure to cinema for decades. You can say that about very few actors, and keep a straight face.
